TESTING THE FRESHMEN.

UNIVERSITY ETJGBY. (from ottb own coreespokdent.) LONDON, October 19. It was unlucky that, in the Freshmen's Itugby contest at Oxford, G. G. Aitkan should have been starred. He has come to the Mother Country -with a fine reputation, bat in his first match he held merely a -watching #rief, tnuch to the disappointment of those interested. "The Times" correspondent believes he touched the ball twice. "Aitken is sturdily built, has plenty of pace, and it would be foolish to judge him on this performance." H. 8. H. Gilmer (Wellington), ft freshman at Jesus, Cambridge, was very prominent,, in bis first Rugby game, playing for the Whites versus Colours. The opposition included another New Zealand freshman, J. L. Macfariase (Christ's College and Jesus). The "Morning Post" correspondent it Cambridge says that the general hurly-burly habit and lack of concerted defence made it a heavy scoring game. The arrival of Wakefield in the Colours' pack brought sew strength to the side, and they managed to collect 19 points in being beaten by 30.
