COUNTY COUNCILS.

AKAKOA. At the monthly meeting of the Akaroa County Council, there wero present, Crs. E. Hp.y (chairman), J. It. stacker, J. Stewart, B. A. Pettigresw and C. B. Thacker. Tlia Public Works Department wrote offering to pay JBIO towards the cost of taking the drainage from the Duv-auchelle Post Office. The Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board wrote asking the Council to prooeed_ against property -holcfera who were allowing goree to spread. It was decided to rfply stating that the matter was outside the Council's jurisdiction, and that the letter had teen handed to the Stock Department. The Peninsula War Memorial Committee wroto asking for the Council's promised annual donation of £2O towards the vpfceep of the memorial site. It was reso'ved to forward the amount and to ask the Memorial Executive for a statement of expanses incurred in connexion therewith. . North Canterbury County Councils wrote in referenoe to contributions of local bodies to the Hospital Board, strongly protesting against the present system of levying rates on property rather than on an adjustment in connexion with the number of patients frc-m each district. It was suggested that every county should co-operate in the matter and that Parliamentary candidates Bhould be, questioned thereon. Tho suggestion was agreed to, the chairman und?rtaking to attend to the latter part of it. Mr R. Shadbolt, one of tho Council's oldest employees, attended in connexion with his resignation from 'the staff. He was granted a bonus of 10 guineas m recognition of his long services. The report of the engineer in charge of the crusher plant was adopted. The finance report showed receipts amounting to ±'G5 15s ltd, and a dr. balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £I7OO 0s 2d. The chairman reported that he had ordered the pickets a-ndl jarrah rails for the fence around the Council Chambers' section. Mr T. Stewart wa® empowered to obtain totara posts to tho value of £lO. Considerable discussion took place on tho state of the roads and tlioir upkepp. The chairman remarked that much of the mstal the Council put on tho roads was lost, owing to the want of a Toller. It appeared as if tho ordinary traffic were expected to perform the services of a steam rol'er. He strongly advocated County Council and Road Boards combining to purchase a suitable one. No action w.as taken, the matter being held ovor for future consideration. The chairman and Mossrs J. D. Bruce, R A. Pettigrew and F. Stewart were appointed a deputation to join representatives of other local bodies on the Peninsula in waiting upon the Canterbury Hospital Board to press the claims of the proposed new hospital in Akaroa.
