EXPRESS HITS MOTOR CAR.

ONE MAN KILLED; ANOTHER SEVERELY INJURED. The railway crossing at Cutler's road between the Middlcton and Addington railway stations, was the scene" of a fatal collision yesterday between tho express from the South, which was being driven by Mr D. McNeill, and a motor-car, as a result ot which on* man was killed and another lies in the

hospital in a serious condition. Tho car, a five-seater tiuick, was bouig driven towards lticcarton by Mr Daniel Sinclair, his sou, Mr John Galloway Sinclair, being with him. The hour was about 5.10 p.m., and the express was running a lew minutes lute. The engine caught the car mid-way across tho line, killing Mr Sinclair, sen., instantaneously, and injuring tho Ron severely. The express, which was travelling at a high rate of speed, carried the car along for a considerable distance boforo a stop was made, the car by this tiiuo being smashed into a twisted mass. The reftnains of the deceased wore placed in the train, and with the injured mah, were taken into Christehurch. Mr Sinclair, jim., was removed to tho hospital, where Dr. Ourrie attended him.

There is a clear view at the crossing, but probably Mr Sinclair was under the impression that, owing to the hour, tho express had gone through, and was unprepared for it. There was no crossingkeeper at the crossing. Both the docensod and hie son lived at No. 17 Ayr street, Riccarton. Tho former, who was 49 years of age, was employed in the Addington workshops, and was a well-known musician,. Ho was considered to be one of the finest players of the clarinet in the Dominion, and was a well-known member of tho Select Orchestra at Everybody's Picture Theatre. The staff of the theatre and the members of the orchestra were greatly shocked at th« news of hie tragic end. Mr Sinclair was a man who was popular with all who knew "him. The son is a single man, 24 years,of age.
