ASHBURTON ITEMS.

Angling. A few anglers visited the Ashburton and Rangitata rivers at the week-end, with disappointing results so far as sport was concerned, only a few small trout being caught, but there was some fairly good sea fishing at the Rangitata. Trout, both in the Ashburton. and Rangitata, are known to be plentiful, but so far this season they have not risen at all freely, and anglers can only attribute this to the fact that there appears to be an abundance of natural feed coming into, the rivers. Bowling. The Ashburton sub-centre has finished tho first game in the Thomas Builock Pennant matches. The Ashburton C team met Methven on the Metliven green and scored a rather easy victory. each of the Ashburton rinks being up at th© close of the play. Ashburton A met Ashburton C on the local green, ana won. Rakaia. had a bye. Borough Improvements. The Advanoe Ashburton Association is making good progress with the levelling and improving of the railway reserves in East street. There was a good' "nice of grass, and under the influence of the recent rains there has been a good growth, and the reserves are looking beautifully green. The section wmch had been used for the parking of cars is now being ploughed and levelled and will be sown down this week. There was a lot of strong opposition to the doing away of this parking place, and a protest is being made in accordance with a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Provincial kxeoutive of the Fanners' Union. St. Stephen's Girls' Club.

After the members of the St. Stephen's Anglican Church Girls' Club had concluded their garden party in the vicarage grounds there was a very large gatheiing in the Parish Hall, when an enjoyable concert programme was given in'aid of the funds of the club. Items were then given by Mrs H. Wright and Miss Nancy .Wright (Christchurch), Missses Galbraith, T. H. Choat. Meta Gibson, Gladys Bushill, Master Paul Choat, and others. The dancing of Miss Nancy Wright and Miss Gladys Bushill was particularly graceful. During an interval, the president, Miss Ruddick, thanked the large audience for their attendance, and said she specially desired, on behalf of the Girls Club, to cordially thank Mrs Wright, Miss Galbraith and Mrs F. H. Choat. The entertainment was brought to a close with "An Empire Review," in which were contained patriotio songs and tableaux under the direction of Mrs Choat.

Catholic Club. The Ashburton Catholio Club and Literary and Debating Society brought its season to a close with a smoke concert, at which there was a very large gathering, including many members of St. Stephen's Anglican Church Men's Gub. Mr Ryan (president), was in. the chair, and was supported by the Very Rev. Dean O'Donnell, Amongst other toasts honoured were "The Babies," "The Ladies," "Ashburton Catholic Club," and "&t. Stephen's Men's Club."

Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, John "Wilfred Lawson, alias Thomas, alias Watson, was charged with obtaining goods to the value of £3 18s yd from Beath and Co., Christchurch, by means of a forged order. He was also charged with having stolen £4 in money, the property of Edward Woffindin at Ashburton. He was remanded till Friday, bail being allowed self in £IOO and two sureties of £IOO each.. An old man named Frederick James Williams, charged with using indecent language at the railway station, was convicted and discharged,'
