MASSED BANDS' CONCERT.
A concert by the united bands of Ckrietchurch was to havebeen given in. the Botanic Gardens yesterday afternoon in aid of the Bridge of "Remembrance funds. Unfortunately several heavy showers of rain occurred in the morning, and, owing to the dampness of the Gardens and the threatening nature ©3 the weather at 2 o'clock, it was decided to postpone the massed bands ooncext in the Gardens until the middle of. Deoember, when the weatier should be more settled. A takeeage to "that effect was sent to Derry's Private. Band, which hadi assembled at its rooma in Armagh street.. The ■ other bands, however, had assembled in Cathedral'square, where ( large erowd of peop'.e had gathered, and, after a conference with the conductors, it *?>*B decided, in order not to disappoint the orowd, to give a modified programme in Victoriasquare, where shelter oould quickly be reached in the event of rain. Despite a somewhat boisterous wind, and an occasional ehower < rain, an excellent programme .of band music was enjoyed Ipy some three thousand people in Victoria, square.. Selections were given, according to the order of tiie draw, by the Fifth Battalion Bugle Band under Sergt.Major L. Oakes, the Highland Pipe . Band 'under* Pipe-Major R; Scott, the. Regimental Band under Conductor Lieut. C. H. Hcekins, the Caledonian Band under Pipe-Major Shan- ■ nahan, the Tramway Band under Conductor J. Noble, and the Wooleton Band under Conductor R.. J. EstaU.
.The sum.'of £80" 9s was oollected during the afternoon. It was unfortunate that tb weather prevented what would probably hav been a record attendance ■ at tKe Gardens, but, as the bands- have moat generously promised to give their original programme in the Gardens on Sunday, December 17th, it •'
hoped that all who were disappointed yesterday will have , the opportunity <of he'arifig the united bands' under the most favourable oonditions.' ' I '■
