SUMNER ITEMS.

Horticultural Society. A meeting of the committee of the Sunmer-Redcliffa Horticultural Society was held on Thursday evening, when officers were appointed and matters concerning the f orthconiing show wore discussed. The following were appointed judges: General exhibits (cut flowers>, Messrs Nairn and Jones; decorative classes, Mr W. Erasmusson; cookery, Mesdames Gardner and Morton; vegetables and fruit, Mr F. Selwyn; photography, Mr Wheeler; botany, Mis Cor- I eon; drawing and painting, Mr W. Bartley; writing, Mr C. C. Corfe; meccano, Mr A. A. Cheshire; needlework, Mrs Thornley. It was decided to call a meeting of the Ladies' committee next week. Mrs W. Bailey and Mr J. J, Smith were elected new members. Sports Association. A meeting of the Sumner Sports Association was held in the Bowling Pavilion on Wednesday evening. Mr C. M. Roswell presided, and delegates from the various sports bodies affiliated were in attendance. The secretary leported that the conference with "the New Brighton delegates resulted in tho points in dispute being settled to the satisfaction of both sides, tin result of the competitions now being: New Brighton 5 points, Sumner 3J points. A comprehensive programme for the coming year was drawn up, to be submitted to New Brighton, the challenge to include the following sports: Bowling, billiards, snooker, golf, nth etics, Fire Brigade events, rifle shooting, lifesaving, boxing, football, and cricket. It was decided to delete from tl:e rules the clause which allows members of the clubs not being residents to compete in any branch of sport for which, there is no specified club. Gala Committee. A very largely attended 1 meeting of the Gala Committee was held :it Mr Buttle's residence, when it was decided to hold 1 the gala on January 21st, 1923. The Surf Club wrote stating that it was willing to run two side-shows, and assist in every way possible. The offer was received with thanks. The- subcommittees reported considt-rable progress. An art union is to be set going, and some very valuable prizes are available. A sub-committee was set up to organise the affair. The proceeds of the gala are to go towards the Beach Improvement Fund, and already considerable improvements have been made to the grounds about the fturf Club's pavilion. Rannerdale Soldiers. As a result of the programme given in the Band Rotunda by the Ist Canterbury Band under Lieut. Hoskius, the sum of £5 7s 9sd was handed to the secretary of the Rannerdale Soldiers' Holiday Fund. A series of concerts is to be arranged for the same purpose—the next being given by the Eroica Club in the Town Hall on November 20th. Presbyterian Church. During last week the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. D. Dutton, paid a visit to Sumner and conducted the anniversary services at the local Presbyterian Church. Large congregations were recorded all day, the celebration of the communion service being taken at the close of the morning service. In ihe afternoon a special children's service was held, the adclres3 being given by the Rev. W. T. Todd. At the morning service the children's choir contributed an anthem and Mr. T. M. Charters sang a solo.. Miss B. Browno ahd Mrs Mogridge sang solos at the evening service. Mr Diitton intimated that it was his intention to visit Sumner again on his return from the Convocation of the As6embly, and that he would then lecture on Red Cross work and his experiences in the Boer War and on Gallipoli. Householders' Meeting. Owing to bad weather only a moderate attendance was recorded at the householders' half-yearly meeting. Mr G. A. At a meeting of the Scout Committee tho final'results of the Gala showed that sufficient money had been raised to pay expenses, leaving a small balance in hand. -It was decided to hold a combined Church Parade on the ship at a later date, the arrangements being left with Scoutmaster Sherrard. It was arranged to show the children from the School for the Deaf over the ship and to entertain them at afternoon tea. St. Paul's Ladies' Guild. On "Wednesday afternoon the members of St. Paul's Ladies' Guild met at Mrs I. Wilson's residence to say good-bye to Mrs Sidney Williams, who is leaving for Australia next week, after a six months visit to the Rev. and Mrs W. J. Williams. A 6mall book of JSfew Zealand views was given to her as a keepsake.' Delightful tea and musical and elocutionary items made the afternoon pass very quickly.
