EAST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL.

At tlie last meeting of the East Christchurch School Committee Mr W. O. Harvey extended a hearty welcome to Mr G. Ij. Bull, who takes the position rendered vacant by the removal of Mr Green from the' district. Correspondence was received from the Board advising that Miss M. E. Pennai had been appointed assistftnt-mißtress, and forwarding the names of two applicants for the position of assistant-master. The committee favoured the appointment' of Mr George Lawn. It was decided to emphatically protest against closing the school, on Moorhouse avenue, and stating that the reasons given the Board in a letter of June J3th last still held good. Mr Sheppwd spoke strongly against the notion of the Government in commandeering the schools on 'election day, and, on his motion, it was agreed to bring l tii* subject before the School Committees' Association. The annual picnic was fixed 'for Friday, November 17th, the locale being Kaiapoi. The headmaster reported that, the attendance had been as good aa could be expected, the prevalence of mumps a'<d measles, the average at the main school being 870 out of a, roll of 910, audi at the Moorhouse avenue school 119 out of a roll of 122. The secretary was instructed to write and oongHatulate Miss Kempthorne and her pupils on the success of the concert lately, given on behalf of the picnic fund. Messrs Stewart and Stokes were appointed a visiting committee for the month. The secretory of the East Chrjstchurch Amateur Swimming Club wrote expressing the appreciation, of the members for the way the committee had helped in improvng the school bath, »nd stating it would enable the'dub to hold championship races in the bath, which it was unable- to do in the pact.

THE ROYAL ENGINEERS. —: —♦ ~~. As part of the war memorial of the Royal Engineers, the roll of honour of all..rants of the corps who fell in the war will be deposited in, the .chapel which ib being prepared as part of the national memorial to Earl Kitchener la-the'north-west corner of St. Paul's Cathedral. The roll will be deposited in a niche protected by a grille in wrought iron. The corps has arranged with the Engineer Corps, of the Dominions and India to deposit their rolls of honour with that of the Royal Engineers in the Kitchener, Chapel. _ . The Royal Engineers' roll, which is inscribed on white vellum, contains orer 19,000 names. They are set forth in alphabetical order, that of Earl Kitchener appearing between .those of a .sapper and a.seoond The fifth page, specially dedicated to his memory, represents Earl Kitchener inspecting the new armies as they marched past him to the port of embarkation.
