* DOMINION'S POPULATION. Much interesting information regarding the population of New Zealand, compiled from the census of April 17, 1921, has been published by the Government Statistician in a special blue book. The total population at that date, excluding Maoris, waa 1,218,913. It included only 18,007 persons of foreign birth, the bulk of the population—9B.B7 per cent—having been born within the British Empire. There were 1160 born at sea. A still larger proportion—99.3l per cent., representing 1,210,461 persons—affirms allegiance to the British Crown. Only 8001 persons are foreign subjects, the largest numbers being as follow', with the numerical increase or decrease since the census' of October, 1916, shown in parentheses: China, 2712 (increase 860); .United States, 1013 (increase 147): Jugoslavia, 857 (—); Germany, 521 (decrease 628); Denmark, 480 (decrease 333); Sweden, 341 (decrease 195); Norway, 301 (decrease 197); France, 264 (increase 35): Italy, 229 (decrease 105); Switzerland, 219 (decrease 60); Russia, 197 ( —); Finland, 166 ( —). No other nationality is represented by more than 100 persons. There are 60 Austrians, nine Japanese, nine Turks, and three Bulgarians. The classification by races shows 1,209,358, equal to 99.22 per cent., of European races. There were 5207 race aliens, including half-caste, of which the largest numbers were: Chinese, 3241 (increase since 1916, 957);. Syrian, 680 (increase 109); Indian, 606 (increase 890); Polynesian, £Bl (increase 109); Negroes, 89 (decrease 9); Asiatic Jews, 68 (increase 28); Japanese, 38 Of the Chinese 927 were in the Auckland province and 1230 in the Wellington province.
