The Car of Cars at Oippia SUCCESSFUL LOCAL INDUSTRY m. '/ * . . i- r * jv Ax* f * JWfcfpf It is no exaggeration to say that the above handsome limousine has attracted more attention than any other exhibit at the Olyrapia Exhibition- It is staged on Scott & Oo.'s Stand (No. 10), the body being built by the well-known local firm of Messrs. Johnson and Smith. It is an entirely original design, having a graceful oval top and back, and is built on a 6-cylinder Fiat chassis. A feature of this car is the frameless V-fronted screen, which is unique, the centre bar being dispensed with, thus giving the driver an uninterrupted view of tho road. The screen also enhances tho appearance of the car. The front windows and doors are controlled by winding regulators, thus enabling one to have as much fresh air as desired. The two front seats are made to slide backward or forward with one movement, and the whole of the seating is the acme of comfort. Another feature is the door-lockins device, which is formed by having a Yale lock fitted in the handle. This is the first time this fastening has been attempted in New Zealand, and the same remark applies to the whole of the body. The trimmings are in plain broadcloth with silk lace edgings, with Sedan silk sunblinds. The paint work of the body is finished in Violetta, the top part and guards being in black, the whole giving a most striking effect. Altogether this is one of the finest examples the writer has ever seen, and it is a car which to behold is to long for. Messrs. Johnson and Smith are also showing at Olympia several other masterpieces of the body-builders' craftsmanship. On the same Stand as above is a model that is making its debut In the Dominion, to wit, a 4-seater sporting body on a Piat chassis. The tody is of polished aluminium, which, of course, adds to tho lightness of the car. This body is the outcome of months of tedious and painstaking work by the staff, and it is upholstered in a checked leather to match. It has a select effect, and is one that appeals strongly to those who like something out of the ordinary. On tho Amuri Co.'s Stand (No. 8) the same firm of body-buildors have a 3-seater Coupe body of a new design on a Dodge Bros, chassis. This also has the easily adjusted window regulators on the doors and a special locking device It is upholstered in English Bedford cord, with silk lace addftunents, and has artistic silk sunblinds. The finish and parting are carried out in silver-grey, and the whole effect is very pleasing. On this stand is also staged a 3-seater roadster body on a Dodge Bros, chassis. The outstanding feature of this car is a very reposeful characteristic body made by Johnson and Smith, and it is a good example of their Beetle Back design. The interior is trimmed in Antique maroon, and the paint work is of Victoria lake. The stream-like lines of the body have been much admired. On Crozier's Stand (No. 16) another fine example of the Beetle Back body is to be seen. This is built on an Austin 20 chassis, and without doubt the finished product could hold its own with anything imported. The trimmings are of antique brown leather. The car is painted a deep refined champagne colour, with black facings, and is a car that would command attention anywhere. A large char-a-banc on Mr. Newton King's Stand is of special interest to those who travel. It has a 16-seater body built by Messrs Johnson and Smith on a White chassis, for the Christchurch-Hanmer run. In this car special provision has been made for durability, and the comfort of passengers on a long journey has received a great deal of consideration. It is practically an enlarged touring car and consequently has attracted a great deal of attention from tourists, wlio consider it Quite the equal of anything constructed on the Other Side. The builders have made numerous cars for a similar purpose and consequently know exactly what is required for this typo of work. On the Rink Taxisi Stand (No. 15) is to be seen an exquisitely finished body on a 3-seater Essex chassis. It is beautifully upholstered in an uncommon antique buff leather and finished off in a delicate shade of cream. It is a very roomy car, and there is plenty of accommodation for luggage at the back. Motorists and others have expressed great surprise that such excellent work has been accomplished in this city, and Messrs Johnson and Smith have been the recipients of many congratulations on the beauty of design and effectiveness of their exhibits, and, what is more, the congratulations are thoroughly deserved. Visitors are invited to inspect the works, and a view of the hive of Industry where these masterpieces are turned out will well repay anyone. Johnson & Smith THE Body Builders 132 Kilmore Street
