Last year saw a strong favourite in Furious beaten by Cupidon. and history may repeat itself. More Unlikely things than this have happened. As is usual, a big field of nearly thirty starters will go to tho post for the Epsom Handicap the "first leg'' of tho big spring double; the Metropolithe leg, will bo run or. Monday. The Victorian owner-trainer, Air E. A. Connolly, appears to hold a strong hand with Rostrum and Fleuriste, and although the former is a good favourite, many good judges in Australia favour tlie lighter-weighted i rl^t^l The Epsom has not been a good raoe for favourites, and from 1903 I until Beauford scored last year, a favourite had not been successful, in | tlie history of tho race only three favourites having been first past tho I ° oln Loyal Arch > antl C,1 P>j ""l • represent the Dominion, and the Absurd four-year-old is a strongly-fancied candidate. As this race is solidly run right from barrier rise, the Cupidon we know might not be brilliant enough to hold his place in the early stages, but he can be relied upon to be galoping on in the last furlons. A Sydney message says Cupidon has been scratched for the Epsom Handl- I cap. j The reoent running at Avondale and Otaki atfords a criticism on the form in the Wanganui Guineas (writes "Sir Lancelot"). Highland won at Wanganui in lm 46 3-ss, beating Rapine, 'flie latter went on to Avondale, and won in five seconds quicker time. That represents a difference of about eighty yards ; Enthusiasm was unplaced in the Wanganui Guineas, and on the concluding day at Otaki, with 121b less to carry, ran a mile and a quarter of a furlong in lm 43 2-os. She covered 5o yards over a mile, and ran the dis-

tance m three seconds faster. The distance and' time mentioned represent a difference of over a hundred yards compared with that occupied for the journey at Wanganui. A Northern writer states that Rals raoe Q t Trcntiiann and then at lliccarton. Another attempt at the ptewards' Handicap is apparentlv to be made. The death, is reported from Welling- /£" ° f , the brood mare Rose Shield (notchkiss— Rose of Wellington). She was foaled in 1900, and represents a T c *. r .y notable family which included Marwlo Royal 'Artillery, and True Bhie. ino family has written its name prominently m the Turf records both of Australia and New Zealand, Blueford, tho dam of tho redoubtable Beauford, bea daughter of True Blue. Sir George Hunter, in addressing the members of the Waipukurau Jockey * + ,t' !0 , an nual meeting last week, stated the indications weTe that, before the session of Parliament comes to an end, legislation would bo passed allnß the publication of dividends, and also the receiving of moneys by the secretaries of racing clubs for investment on tlie totalisator. From an advertisement in a Bombay 5, ew spaper, it is noticed the Rangoon 1 urf Club were in want of an assistant stipendiary steward. The applicants had to be not less than 30 years of age, and ,the pay offered wps Ra. 1.250 (about £B3) per month, with house allowance of Rs. 150 (of £10) per month—not a bad salary, but the cost of living must be proportionately high Eaeingwold, th 6 two Cups candiate ; has arrived ait Plemington from Western Australia. The son of Eaton Lad, whose poor form whgn in Melbourne in his two-year-old season was due, according to his trainer, E. FTsher, to his growing too rapidly, is also engaged in the V.R.C. Cantata Stakes. He has developed into a nice horse, and is expected .by hia party to pay his way handsomely on this occasion. Easingwold has Bst 121b,-r-quite his share of weight—in the Caul Geld Cup, Bst 51b in the Oantala Stakes and Bst 31b in the Melbourne Cup. It is understood tho Western Australian light weight N. Percival will ride Easingwold in his Victorian engagements. Cables in the Australian papers state that The Tetrarch —Lady Josephine filly purchased by tlie Newmarket trainer, Hon. Geo. Lambton,. .for 9100 guineas at tho Doncaater sales, was for the Aga Khan (Aga Sultan Mahomed Shah). The biggest price given for a yearling fiily was 10,000 guineas, paid by Mr R. S. Sievier for Sceptre, whose successful career was in vivid contrast to that of The Tetrarch's son Blue Ensign, for which Lord Glanoly gave 14,500 guineas as a yearling. Blue Ensign could not run as a two-year-old, and his only outing this year proved a bad failure. He is now at the stud at a fee of only nine guineas. Lord Glanely has had little better luck with Westward Ho, who has contributed about £IOOO towards the 11,500 guineas paid for him in 1919. The Aga Khan is the head of tho Ismaili Mahometans. Last month his colours were carriea to victory "by St. Illiers in the Prix do la Chaumiere, at Deauville. • "Cardigan." the breeding authority the "Sydney Referee," writes as follows: Gloaming resembles his dam to a remarkable extent. In October last year I had the pleasure of visiting Melton Stud, and when we approached a batch of brood mares in the fine big paddocks at Melton I did not need anybody to tell mo that Gloaming's dam was amongst the batch. She was easily picked out because of tho remarkable likeness to her famous son. She is rather a darker bay than Gloaming, but m conformation is very liko him, particularly about the head and neck, and over tho back and quarters. Foaled in 1907, sho was beginning to look the old mare, although she still retained an activity that was almost juvenile. Bred in England, she was imported by Mr TC. E. D. Clarke, and is by E'iger Irom No Trumps (half-sister to Bill of Portland), by Orvieto from Electric Light, by Sterling. There is hnrdly any need forme to say that Electric Light has not produced anything within cooee of Gloaming, although three of her produce in One, Hare Hatch, and Refraction, all by Tho Welkin, have won races. The stallion Lally, by Amphion from Miss Hayden, has been destroyed in Italy to. which country he waa sent, in 1912. Foaled in 190JL he had a successful career on the English Turf, and rendered useful service as a sir© in Italy. _ Foalings reported at Burnaide are: Tango, bay filly to Solferino, and visita Paper Money; Temba, a brown colt to Tractor; Lin, a bay colt to Solferino: Panama, a bay filly to Solferino; ano Nada, a bay colt to Solferino. Mr P" P. Wilson's Hot Air has foaled a bay filly to Gay Lad and visits Solferino. GEEALDINI! E.C.'S SPRING MEETING. Tho weather was fin«, but dnll, for tho concluding day of the GoraMine Racing Club's Spring Meeting, and tho going waa firmer £Hewn on Thursday, Tho attendance* was good and tho racing interesting. The machine handled £11,298 against £14,968 for the second day lost year, making a total of £23,190 for the meeting, compared with £29,663 10a last year. Resiilta. Time, lm 30 2-ss. Winner bred by C. Dalgety and trained by R. Emerson. NOTES ON THE RACING. The betting in the Second Hurdles Handicap was confined to Romance and Headlong, who were backed in the order named, both being at odds on. Headlong fenced better than on the first day, and landed ovetf. the laat fenoe with what 1 ' looked to be a winning margin, but once T. L. Reid pulled out the whip Romanco responded go gamely that he had Headlong beaten a-hundred yards from the winning post. Headlong put up a very weak fight when pressure was applied, and it looks as if he is a gelding that is boaten when he stops pulling. None of the other runners were ever dangerous. Eighteenponce was made a pronounced favourite for the Wainui Hack Handicap, in which three horses—Frisco Mail. Nyanza, and Dollarpiece—wore coupled. Tno favourite was on the -move when the- tapss. -were released, and she was cut by herself when two chains had been covered. She maintained her advantage to the finish, lasting long enough to win by two lengths from Trevella, who had- been slow to find his feet, but was running on better than anything in the straight. The. winner is undoubtedly possessed of a fine burst of speed, but ia evidently lacking in stamina. The owners of Frisco Mail, Nyanza, and Dollarpiece were ' each fined £5 for' not having told the secretary of the club to couple thetm when tlio acceptances closed. The public backed Hoyal Mao, Some Kid, and Silent King in that order in the President's Handicap, and thev finished as backed. Different tactics were adopted with Royal Mac, as, despite his weight, the big horse wbs allowed to strido along in front all the way. This is how ho likes to run, and though all out over the last furlong, he came home a comfortable winner. Some Kid and Silent King both raced honestly and well, but they could never g«t near the i flying leader. Almoner ran ft bad race, for after being well placed in tho -early stages he died out and finished laat. j The field went away in perfect line in tho . I Stewards' Handicap, and they ran abreast for nearly a furling, Pyiama, on the rails, being haid ridden to hold his place. Wartune, who started from No. 4 instead of the No. 1 drawn for her, was the Brat to break the line, and she led into the straight, ( Jackeroo being- almost level with her. Kil- 1 derg struggled up to boat Wartune, but oould not got to Jackeroo, who only arrived from the North Island on Thursday. Pyjama again ran a bad race, and is perhaps losing his dash, besides having developed a habit i of hanging in badly. The Gladstone handicap proved to be the i beet race of the Meeting. The field went away in lino. Brown Willie was the first to ►how out, while Warhaven brought up the rear. In tho etraight Brown Willie looked likely to last long enough to win, but Bosker Boy and W arliaven. finished Very faat, and at the judgo's box he split them, there beintr heads between tho three, with Boadicea and Kerry Star at their heeta Warhaven is certainly due to win a race very soch. . The start, for the Farewell Welter was good but it is on a. turn, and running up the' back the field was strung out a long way. Falataff bringing up the rear. Jazz, who had always been well up, rushed to the front three furlongs from home, and won easily.

She commenced tho season at Gatvick in June, defeating her solitary opponent, Sir Greysteel, in tho Red Rose Stakes, 5 furlongs. Her other success was gained in the Empiija Stakes (6f) at the Dewbury Summer Meeting, when she defeated eight opponents. Apparently she is a versatile filly that can both sprint and stay. Baton Rouge has had a somewhat chequered career this season. Ho was unplaced at his first attempt in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury in a smart field. In his next race, the llaiden Thuse-Ycar-Old Stakes at tho Newmarket First Spring Meeting, Werwolf and Baton Rougo finished first and second, but were' disqualified for bumpingand boring, and the race awarded to Ceylon.-? 65, who finished third, and was in a similar position in the St. Leger at Doncaster. Next time out, Baton Rouge was a good third to Golden Myth and Vilna in tho Ascot Gold Vase, and was subsequently unplaced in tlo Horwicke stakes at the same malting. Up to the end of July G'orioso bad started seven times for two firsts and two eeoonds. His successes were soored in the Waldegrave Handicap (lim) at the Kempton Park Spring Meeting, and in the Lion Gate Handicap (2m) at the Hurst Park Whiftfcntide Meeting.
