FARMERS' UNION. (SPECIAL TO- " THE FREBS.") GREYMOUTH, July 20. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Farmers' Union carried the following resolutions: —■ "That this Union supports thft Grey Valley Farmers' Union in its efforts to have the Waimunga State farm run on a dairying basis, and to notify the Department of Agriculture to that effect." "That this Union strongly protests to the Gr% County Council against the enormous increase in this year s, rates, and also suggests that a Commission be 6et up to enquire into the vast expenditure at tfue Grey River Hospital, to see if the/amount cannot be considerably reduced without reducing the efficiency of the institution.". A letter was received from the Wairoa Fanners' Union in the matter of formin<r a i "Blackberry Board," to try to cope with this pest. It was agreed that something shx>,uld be done soon, but tbe matter was left over till after the formation of a provincial executive 011 the Coast.

, Wataroa Cheese Factory. A meeting of' shareholders of the Wataroa Cheese Factory, Ltd., unanimously confirmed the proposal for the erection of a butter-making plant at the Wataroa factory. The plant is to be modem, and the machinery, etc., is bein"- ordered. This factoiy, when completed, will be the most modem on the Coast, and it is hoped the qualitv of the butter turned out will,be as high as the cheese. Wataroa believes that dairying is going to be a* great boon to fcouth Westland as the years advance, and particularly when the rivers are bridged. An Unpayable Proposition.

The Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister of Railways) has written to Mr T. E Y. Seddop, M.P., aa follows: With reference to vour representation in forward-: ing a petition from residents of Chesterfield urging that a. siding be provided at the local railway station, I have to inform you that the oountry in the vicinity is,, of poor quality and sparsely settled, and neither, the present nor prospective traffic is sufficient to warrant the expenditure which would be involved in furnishing the - facility asked. ■ Telephone System. A start hias been made on thd installation of the metallic return system of telephony. At Kauieri, this morning, the. death occurred of Mrs J. Marks aftert lengthy illness. The deceased. Was well known in Kumara. She leaves a husband and two'daughters—Mesdaancs J, Marks, jun.
