NEW SPIRIT AT SEA.

P. AND 0. LINER'S EXAMPLE,

After a round voyage to Australia; lasting 130. days, the P. and 0. branch liner Biuadine, carrying a crow of 244, hue been docked in London with an absolutely clean log-boo*, there having been no cause of complaint of any kind respecting any member <jf the crew. 'Thisjil said an cfiiciul of the company to a Press representative, "is a striking example ot me iitw spirit existing between owners, officers, and men, which is typical ..of tho whole of the 'British mercantile marihe. We ourselves have always endeavoured to foster the best relations between the company and our people afloat, and in this we have generally been assisted by the practical attitude of the ?<ational Sailors' and Firemen's Union. The report made by the master of the ship, Captain G. A. Lanphier, covering as it does 81,720 crew-days, is all the more remarkable from the fact that during the voyage calls were mado «t We ports on eight occasions, and it Is generally during these

the men aw likely to get unsettled. It should ba emphasised that the crew were all British, and fell X hope ib that wa get the majority of thom back for the iiext voyage. M

THE STEAMER FRANCE,

AN INTERESTING HISTORY.

Considerable interest uttaches to the little stoamer France, which arrived at Auckland lust week from Noumea, on account of hor historical record. Slits was built nt Newcastle, England, in 1869, by a Arm that was then carrying out a contract in connoxion with tha Thames bridge, ami her first commission wh« to carry materials down the coast and to handle heavy machinery. She was then called the Ringm'oor. Her build is said to make hor spetially suitable for the West Coast trade. Her maximum draught is only 10ft ult, and drawing this depth of water she will be able to Work the bars an\l shallowß in safety. Hor •engine power, CI h.p.. with an oil pressure of 1501b, is particularly high for a vossel of her site. Her nold, originally built to oarry heavy machinery, has exceptional capacity for a little Steamer, and is fitted with two large h&tchos. For the past few years tile France had been engaged in trade around tho New Caledonia and New Hebiides Islands, during which commission she traded regularly botween New Caledonia and Sydney. Mr A. L Stevenson, peueral manager of the Waikato Shipping; Company, who returned from New Caleucnia by ilie vessel, on being questioned us to the steamer's sea qualities, said that she had a reputation for strength and solidity, combined with good apet'i, 11 knots having been attained. While he was on board she mado two coastal trips ut New Caledonia before clearing for New Zealand. The weather she met with on nearing thie coast was a keen tost for a steamer of her SKC) but she came through quite satisfactorily.

Tho Franco is 141 feet in length, 21 foot wide, und the depth of her hod is 9 feet. She has a pross tonnage of 257, ami on hor recent trip left Noumea, with 2GO tons dead weight, including bunkers und water. She is at present undergoing survey for reregistration, as, having been under the French flag, she came to Auckland under a certificate from the British Consul and Lloyd's Surveyor at Noumea. She is now being placed permanently under the British register, ar.'-l on comjiletion of her survey will take her deparhwo for Onohunga. It is anticipated that sho will be ready for commission in about ten days' time.

OVERDUE MANUREWA.

A GREYMOTJTH VIEW.

(SFECIAL TO "THE PRESS.")

GREYMOUxH, May 11. The prospects of the oveidue barque Ma.nuweia turning up are being eagei'iy discussed by local snipping ciroitd. 'liie general opinion, a» expressed by Captain voi [Harbourmaster) is that the mantel' of the MailUWei'a wouid head. for New Zeamnd and probably maxe for Kuipara or Ureymouth,, where there would be a prospect of securing a cargo of timber to oonvey to Australia. As no bad weather ha* been reported., it, is considered there is iw reason to look upon, the Manurewa as lost. [The schooner Huddershtld, which left Sydney a day after the Hamueivii, and which reached the Ciaren.ce River in six dttyi, has since loaded; a full cargo of hardwood and sailed across to Auckland, whsre she arrived yesterday morning.]
