EXCESS OVEB THE ESTIMATE

In the course of his speech to-night, the Prime Minister said tliat the Land Tax for i.8'21-22 had been estimated to produce £1,530,000 after the deduction of the 10 per cent, rebate. The actual amount collected had been £1,637,816, an excess over the estimate of £107,816. The estimated return of the income tax for the financial year had been £6.000.000, less five per cent, rebate., or a net return of £5.700,000. The actual amount collected' had been £6,002,087, the excess over the estimate being £302,087. Mr Massey quoted figures to show that the payers-of income tax in New Zealand were in a better position than the payers of the combined Federal and State income tax in Australia. Ou a taxable earned income of £SOO, the New Zealand tax amounted to £2O ss, while the combined Commonwealth and Queensland tax amounteu to £36-Is.
