The death of a single woman, Frances Jean McCarthy, 27j formed the subject of an inquest before v Mr J. S. BartoUy Coroner. The evidence showed that Miss McCarthy and a girl companion were Walking .home on the night of March 7th> on the correct side of the road, with their bicycles, when they were run into by a motor car occupied by two young men and two girls. . „ ■; Th<j> Coroner returned a verdict that death was the result of injuries received on March 7th, when' Miss McCarthy was run down at night by a motor-car which at thi! tim<s was in the joint control Of Sydney Hirst Forbes and Albert Hector Charles. The Coroner added that it would seem necessary to arouse a greater sense of responsibility lor the protection of the public. The evidence established that the car was insufficiently lighted, the night was fairliy dark, and the car was travelling; at si fairly fast pace., The lights threw iao beam in front, v but threw light, on the side only, and the driver did not see Miss McCarthy until T-ne car was practically in contact with her. Mr Barton said he felt it his duty as Coroner to say that the evidenod showed a stal« of things that could only be described as shocking, when viewed as the possible standard of the conduct of motor-car drivers towards other users of the road. Forbes and Charles were subsequently charged with manslaughter and remanded for a week.' Bail was fixed in each case at £1.50 ,and sureties.
