Instinct in young animals is still a mysterious influence, little understood. Sea turtles are hatched from eggs laid Ov the parent on dry land ; as soon as they emerge thoy make unerringly for the sea. To discover what guided theni, sheets of coloured paper were tried When a red or yellow sheet was placed in front of the baby turtle he would turn and try another direction; but a blue sheet attracted him towards it wherever it was placed. Colour, therefore, rather than an instinctive sense of direction, would seem to be the guide f()r the newly hatched turtle. But even so, it was instinct, hereditary in him, that told him his proper home waa coloured blue.
