Sir Roseberv, who was bred, and is owned and trained, .by the Wairarapa sportsman Mr R. is a fiv.e-year-old brown f elding by Sir Knox—Merrie Rose, esterday's race was Sir Rosebery's best effort to date, and he was doubtless .served by his minimum weight on the heavy track. Island, winner of the Hope Welter Handicap, is a four-year-old black gelding by Finland—All's Well. Island has a moderate record this season, having been placed second once in six starts.

The Pemosthenes —Rose Shield filly Rose of Athens, who won the Stewards' Handicap, was successful last time out; at the Pahiatup meeting. Rose of Athens is trained at Trentham by A. Anderson, he took charge at half-way, and won with • something to spare. from American Beauty, who was prominent throughout. Esperanco and Princess Pat wero their nearest attendants at the finish.

Missland tried to win the Hope Hack 'Welter from end to end, b\it Island, finishing fenerously, overhauled her in 'tho etfaight. 'itch Dark carried top-weight into third place, and Lady Witchet was fourth.
