PROGRESS LEAGUE.

MEETING OP EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Progress league was held last night. Mr "W. K- McAlpine presided in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr A. J*. Henderson. There were also preseift Messrs P. It. Ciiroie (orgrfniser), H. J. Marriner, H. Holland, H. J. Knight, W. J. Jenkin, J. Longton, A. F. "Wright, C. R. Williams, F. J. Board, J. A. Flesher, W. Lester, G. T. Mulcdck, G. H. Holford, A. F. AVright, M. W. Stevenson, T. Blaokley, and W. E. Leadley. The financial statement showed that on February Ist there was a cash balance of £lB 14s Bd, and since then local bodies had contributed £167 lU.i, the Lyttelton Harbour Board £IOO. and mail service account £lo.' The total receipts wore £284 17s. That made the credit balance £BO3 lis B'd. The expenditure amounted to £lO3 lis 3d, leaving a balSnce in hand of £220 0s od. The liabilities were: Mail service account, £3O; unemployment account, £lB 14s 8d; sundry accounts, £6O; total, £lO5 14s 8d! Tho chairman said it was gratifying to loam that the proposal to hold a farm school at Hokitika in May was being received with general approbation. The raising of the funds to meet the costs of the school would be undertaken by the Westland Committee, leaving the executive to undertake the general organisation of the-project and the creation of a widespread interest. Whatever funds were raised were to be handed over to Canterbury College, so that a Government subsidy for £ for £ could be secured. In view of the early completion of Otira tunnel, the League had written to the flfinistej- of Public Works suggesting November Ist as a suitable date for the opening of the West Coast line. The Minister would be paying a visit to the tunnel works next week, and after making careful enquiries lie would probably decide the question and make an official statement. Good progress had been made with matters-connected with the proposed publication of a comprehensive booklet on C-hristchurch And Canterbury. Three local bodies had appointed representatives to serve on the joint committee, a meeting of which would be called in a few days. With regard to the curtailment of the Christchurch-Invercargill express, the committee which was set up by the League should have reason to feel satis-, fled with the good results obtained. No definite reply had yet been received to the invitation to the Prime ]\iinister to pay a short visit to Christchurch and Canterbury during the present recess, but it was learned than he intended visiting South Canterbury about the middle of the month, when he might be ablfi to spend a day or two in this district before returning to Wellington. The organiser reported oil his visit last week to Lake Coleridge powerhouse and the Harper River, his remarks being on similar linos to the report published in last Tuesdav morniuc's issue. The subjects of railwnv servicp curtailment and the Lake Tekapo electric proposal were discussed in committee.
