SPORTING.

A payment of one sovereign is due at noon to-day for the New. Zealand Trotting Derbv, which will be decided at the New 'Brighton Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting on Saturday, . May 20th.. The, Dannevirke Autumn Meeting will be commenced to-day, and the concluding dav of the Thames J. 0.: which was postponed from Monday, will take place. Yerv fair acceptances have been received" for the Nelson J.C Annual Meeting, which owns the Nelson-Mari-borough circuit o? meetings to-morrow. Although the Nelson Cup field has been reduced to seven, they represent very fair handicap class, and an interesting race should en=ue.. Princess Pat, Bst, has recent good form .to recommend her, with Esperance and American Beauty the danger. The Stewards' Handicap has the evergreen Waimat&o. with 10st 21b, at the Tread of the handicap. Triboulet Bst 111b is an ■improving gelding, while one would not look further than Oanvon-Bst 61b if she were m her best form. Tommv Rot Bst 81b has all the Absurd brilliancy, but has failed to stav out sit furlongs in the past, yet a change of trainers may have effected an improvement in this respect. Triboulet, Canyon, and Tommy Rot appear the best. .TKo minor races'have filled particularly well, fOme.UKful horses that are engaged being Sandy McDonald, In the Pink, Mountain March, and Bestir. The plough,, which had been watered overnight was in general use at Riccarton yesterday morning, trainers generally preferring ■it to risking their charges on the trial. grass, which is deoidedlv on the hard side, \\ith- a number*bf handy country meetings m the hear'future, proceedings were .interesting, and some- good-gallops were witnessed. Amongst those that worked well were Winning Hit, Whipping Boy, Miss Mimic, Angelo, Red Hind, Mustard Pot,' Palestrina. Clean Sweep, Mythology, and Warhue. Final gallops for the Motukarara Meeting should take place to-morrow morning, when the work should ; be of a most interesting nature. Amythas and Foo Chow are due, back from Wanganui this morning. F. D. Jones, the.trainer of Amythas, did not wait for the second day at Wanganui, and left the big_son o't Demosthenes in the care of.T. H.'.Gillett. ~ A. Reed- is. establishing a big dead in the jockeys' championship, having now ridden 48 winners, the runner-up, C. Emerson, being credited with 30. Reed's case, is- another illustration .of the-luck, of .the; game. He obtained a great number of good mounts, owing to his brother Roy's disqualification, though at the same time it must be admitted that Reed is brimful of energy,. and rides at every possible meeting. The two remaining members of the family-are still .in third and fourth place respectively, Roy Reed with 28, and Con Reed with 22*. The handicaps for the Waimate R.C. Annual Meeting are framed upon much the same lines as those of. the Motukarara Meeting, : and discussion of the weights will probably he more effective if delayed until after the latter fixture. A Wanganui business man waxes eloquent regarding the merits of lady ticket-sellers in the totalisator at the recent race meeting. He had, he said, decided.to back Scion and to the tune of two sovereigns, and having, as he thought, purchased two No. 6 tickets, he carefully placed them in his pocket and retired to a point of vantage to watch the race. His delight was great when Scion romped home by over a length' to credit. "Just a little refreshment,"' ho remarked to some friends, "before. I. go to the window to gather, in. the notes." Off tbey went and lubricated on tho strength of the win, and then to his disgust, on presenting the-tickets-at'the .pay window, he found:that he had' been suppliedwith- two fives. instead of two sixes."My liick was. clean out, after that, he. remarked, ' 'for: I never got near ■ a dividend'during the remainder of the day,"—Wanganui "Herald." , A cable message from; Melbourne savs that J. Pike: is likely to,, ride [ Solfanello'in the Newmarket Handicap I on;Satufday.' I • 'Jack McKTnney, .Logan's Gift, Tickletoe,. Lady Wildwodd, Lady Freda; and Danidy Rose, returned yesterday' from the,' North, • after assisting at- the Wanganui Trotting Club's Annual Meeting. • '■ The box recently vacated bv Peter the Firsi; in A. Hendriksen's stable, is now ocupied s>y Grand Denver, a speedy but disappointing eon of Denver Huon and Lady Rattoo. Two well-known local -,-' sportsmen, Messrs Free Holmes, and J. G. S. Holmes, intend leaving about ,the middle of April on a visit to. America. • Arthur'Orrell, who recently returned to Newcastle from. New Zealand* was disqualified' for two years for improper practices after the stipendiary stewards had held an enquiry into the running of' Raven's Rock' at Wallsend on Saturday,- February 11th, as compared with" his display at Newcastle on the previous Wednesday (says the Syduey f( .Sun").- The gelding, ran last ot'-nve, with 'Bst 21b, in the Newcastle Flying Handicap; for which he started favourite. He was then ridden by Orrell. 0." O." Davies piloted Raven's Rock in the ■ Wallsend Shorts Handicap, -and three'lengths, with Bst 101b up, when Eulet's chance-was preferred to his. Raven's Rock's owner-trainer, L. Wellard, was exonerated from any blame. Orrell has given'notice of appeal.

Sportsmen throughout. New Zealand have learnt the value of the "Weekly Press and'Eeferee"-as a guide in everything dealing with the conduct of racing and this paper has steadily gained in popularity until at the.present time it has attained a standing .unequalled in New Zealand. This week's issue, which will be on.sale to-day, is right up to the best standard and' the bright chatty articles bv the well known writer "Antisthenes,"' "Wayfarer," ''Spectator,'' and VClanranald" will help to while awav many pleasant hours. Bacin°- at the Wanganui, Thames, and Cltfden' meetings are dealt with in full, and special correspondents from all parts of the.Dominion keep readers well posted in tho latest turf news. The trotting pages are full of information for the followers of the light harness sport, full details of the Wanganui Trotting Club's annual meeting being a special feature ' "Searchlight" contributes a more than usually interesting budget or "Things Seen," which adds considerably to a very interesting publication.
