STRIKE IN GAOL
PRISONERS PUNISHED.

The strike microbe has penetrated into Pentridge prison. Following upon a search, of the cells for contraband, a large number of prisoners refused to work, as a protest against what they claimed was a humiliating system.
Prompt measures wero taken to crush the revolt. At a subsequent inquiry 130 prisoners were charged with insubordination. The governor pleaded for leniency for the majority, because they were coerced by the leaders. Sixty were sentenced to additional terms of imprisonment, ranging from a week to a month.
