BECKENfcAM wins challenge

The annual Challenge Shield Competition, of the Christchurch tub-district of the-St. John Ambulance Brigade we» concluded at the King Edward Barracks on Saturday afternoon, when Beveral squads from the nursing divisions competed for the eub-dia-trict Challenge C»p. Despite the inclement weather there was a fair attendance of .spectators, whose deep interest in the operations of the various squads was further proof of the fact that ambulance work is claiming an increasingly wider share of public at*enFirst aid, transport and home nursing were the subjects in which the teams were tested, and as the team* were taken in individual, oral, and practical sections, the judges were busily occupied for the greater, part of the afternoon. One competitor cut hex hand badly on a splint ferrule, but fortunately there wto no lack of skilled assistance. Although she was obliged to weaii a sling for the remainder, of the afternoon, this lady "went 'through her tasks pruclnly, and her squad secured third honours in contest, a very creditable performance tnttter the oircumstancM. The winning equad waa one of those entered by the Beckenham Division, and this division is Boaroely twelve months old, the performance is regarded aa specially meritorious. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the Beckenham and Selwyn Divisions. j. The judges were:—Drs. J. H. craw&naw, P. C. Fenwick, A. O. Thompson, and J. F, Duncan, Miss ti. Trimble (matron of the Cashmere Sanatorium), Bister .Hamann ■Christchurch Hospital), and Sergeant-Major Thompson. Major A. L. Gray, District Superintendent, aoted as referee, and the official were L> Cooper and Messrs H. J J Hoddinott, and J. Becconsall.
