AMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

TO THE EDITOB OF "THB PEES 3.'» Sir, —i have read your correspond dent's letter, with regard to the above, in which he protests against the unnecessarily high' cost of running the Council business. "Soldier Settler' says that for some time pa3t little work has been done on the Amuri roads. He probably thinks so on account of the men and teams not working in his riding more frequently. He further writes: "Still the Council employ a clerk and an assistant, drawing at least a living wage for three." This i 3 not correct, but I take it that it is means >o read: "The Council should do with one man' for engineering, overseer, and clerk." In fact, his letter infers this when he says that a few years ago all the work was done by an elderly gentleman, the late Mr Smith. This was about ten years ago. It will te readily seen that extra office work is I caused by settlement, which in turn causes heavier and faster traffic, with endless wear and tear on the roads and bridges, all making mote Council work. -Lastly, "Soldier Settler" informs us that a second new car has been bought for the clerk. This also is not correct. The Council simply replaced a worn-out car with one new one. I would like to sfiy to "Sol,dier Settler" that the present Council is earnestly endeavouring to go as economically as it can, and that if ho had an insight into the Cooncil affairs, he would understand that one m ft n cannot manage the present work. In conclusion, I hope "Soldier Settler" will call at the. Council office .and find out the facts of what he saya before writing anonymously.—Yours, etc. Culverden, September &th.
