The Governor-General (telegraphs our Timaru correspondent) has taken Mr A. S. Elworthy's fine home at Paroora, ten miles south of Timaru, for a few months from the middle of December next. The Rev. Guy Thornton, well known to returned soldiers as Captain Guy Thornton, has accepted a call to the pastorate of tlie South Dunedin Baptist Church. Mr L. R. Hurrcll, of the Christchtirch branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has been promoted to the position of accountant and teller at the Oamaru branch. Major Elliott, of Wellington, arrived yesterday, and is staying at St. Elmo. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.P. (Invercargill) .and Dr. Cameron (Dunedin), are also staying at St. Elmo. The Riccarton Cricket Club, at it's annual meeting last night, passed a vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. B. Clarkson, who was a strong supporter of the club. Mr G. S. Ridley, at present agricultural instructor, under the Canterbury Education Board, on the West Coast, was, at yesterday's meeting of . the Board, appointed to a similar position in South Canterbury. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs that tne Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes wab to have left for Christchurch last night. While he is in the South. Sir Heaton Rhodes, and the Hon. 0. J. Parr, will, go to Hanmer Springs in connexion with the handing over of the military hospital there to tho Public Health Department, The Canterbury Education Board, at its meeting yesterday, decided to send a letter of congratulation to Mr George Pitcaithley on his appointment as senior inspector of schools for the Nelson district. Mr Pitcaithley received his education in Cliristchurch, being trained at the Normal College and graduating at Canterbury. College. For about twenty years he was headmaster of the District High School, Waimate.
