THE FRUIT HABIT.
♦ In seeking to discover how tho.fruit habit bo common in America, has been fostered, a writer iu a Ijondon mmpaper turned to the last annual report • of the enterprising organisation in wf* 1 tieh Columbia, known as tho Okanegtrn i United 'Growers. It contains an article i indicating Hhat tlio fruit habit in America is largely duo to the efforts of fruitgrowers ttiemselres, and that their success is the result of cnorgetio pro* paganda. The article points oat the impossibility of going far, either in the United States or Canada, and taking up a newepaper or a magakflttOj whiiout being convincingly reminded that oranges are a most refreshing and healthful food, ratfher than a luxury. "This effective work of demonstration is carried out," the writer adds, "net by some big private corporation, Mit hy the orango growers themselves, by means of vory extensive advertising. This has produced so large a demand for this particular fruit, and orchard values have increased so much, that in come districts in California hearing orangt orchards are worth, as a busmen ia> vestment, up to sis thousand dollars as aore, and many cannot bo bought for that figure. When it is considered that onb' a feiv yeaj-s ago oranges and lemons sold for little or nothing above ceefc of production, and that the difference has been brought about by successful organisation on the part of the grower, we feel like taking off our hats to t?» Califoinian orange grower for showing what can bo accomplished by organised effort." This is simply a typical illustration of the excellent American practice of proclaiming a good article, and not leaving tho public to discover accidentally that it exists.
