POLICE OFFICERS AS JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.

The latest list of appointments as Justices of the Peace contains the names of four police inspectors. These appointments do not establish any new precedent. The Armed Constabulary A9t, which was the forerunner of the Police Force Act, 1886, bv virtue of which many of the present members of the Police Force, hold their appointments, provided that every commandant and inspector, after having taken the oath of shall become without further qualification or appointment, and continue so long as he shall hold such office, but no longer, a Justice of the Peace. The practice of making such appointments has been followed. It has been found in practice that the appointment of commissioned police officers as J.P.'s. has beesn exceedingly useful and convenient to the public. Such officers do not preside on the Bench, even in civil cases, but they have ordinary powers to take the bail of persons in custodv. and to take affidavits and statutory declarations.
