THE THREATENED BUSH.

IMMEDIATE ACTION NECESSARY.

The latest development in connexion with that area of bush on the KaikouraBlenheim road, which many people in Marlborough and Canterbury wish to see preserved, is one which makes immediate action urgently necessary.

The owner, Mr P. Adair, haslet a contract for the felling of 300 acres, including part of the particular arela that has been the subject of recent discussion. Already felling has begun within view of the road. In the Kaikoura district it is felt that Mr Adair is entirely within hia rights, and cannot be expected to incur the loss ,of suspending or cancelling the contract, we understand that the present situation is the result of an intimation from the head of one of the Government Departments that the Government required no more scenio reservations at present. The Kaikoura Countv Council has ?been moving, and the chairman, Mr S. Andrew, has telegraphed to the ActingPrime Minister, Sir Francis Bell, asking him if he can take steps to prevent the injuring of the bush. The Government, it is understood, can take effective action if it « prepared to compensate anyone concerned for the loas of any rights.' The Kaikoura people are hopeful that they will receive, the immediate support of the Canterbury Progress League, and any other bodies interested in the preservation of a raVe and irreplaoeable piece of natural beauty. j
