"What New Zealand wants is a Motor Traffic Act, the same as they have in New South Wales, England, and other countries. Until there exists such statutory backing there will al,ways be a weakness in local body bylaws dealing with motor traffic." This is the firm oninion of Mr L. S. Drake, chief motor inspector to the Wellington City Council, who holds that such a measure should: even come before an A( ■ ■ ""

.ct dealing with taxation for road maintenance purposes. He exhibited to a reporter a handy pocket-book copy of the New South Wales Motor Traffic Act. which is issued to every driver with his annual license and which he must always carry with him whan m charge of a motor vehicle. It gives his name, numl:er, date, and place of registration, etc., on the front oasre. Following that is the Act itself,*and a neat schedule setting out what a motor vehicle driver must and must not do. So equipped, there is no excuse for any driver not knowing the law, and the administration of the Act becomes a comparatively simple matter.

The sixth of a series of popular lectures given in aid of the Canterbury College War Memorial Fund was delivered at Canterbury College last evening by Mr R. Speight, on "The Southern Alps in Youth and Age." Mr Mannenng presided over a large attendance. After dealing with early exploration work in Canterbury and Otago, the lecturer went on to speak of the geological history of the Alps, illustrating his remarks with a large number of slides. The Alps were most monotonous in formation, said Mr. Speight, there being little variation and scarce-, ly any fossils to be found to determine the period of their origination. The Raugitata Valley was the most historic of all the river vallevß in New Zealand, and it was there the most fossils had been found. Mr Speight went on to describe the effect of glaciers on the contour of the range. .One result of the action of glaciers was the formation of lakes, and it was from such a source lake Coleridge had originated, providing the waters which were now utilised in supplying Christchurch with electric power. The lecturer also dealt at some length with the geological formation of the Alps, showing by means of diagrams the manner in which the various strata had been deposited during the countless ages in which the mountains had been built up. At the conclusion of his address Mr Speight was accorded a hearty vote of thanks The biggest value cough medicine in the Dominion to-day is the large 3b bottle of "Stop-It"—the most, efficient cough and cold cure, and also the greatest quantity for your money.
