DEBATING CONTEST.

CHRISTCHUECH AND DUNEDIN ACCOUNTANCY STUDENTS. (special TO "the tress.") •■■'.;"' DUNEDIN, Juno il: '"That a protective tariff is 3iecessary in the interests of the wholo community,'' was the subject of a debate in the Allen Hall, Otago University, between Christchurch- and Diincdln accountancy students. The debate was held under the auspices of the Now Zealand Society of Accountants, which' gave the prizes. It was the outcome of a challenge from the Christchurch

' Student Accountants' .'Society to the. Commerce Faculty of Otago University to debate a set subject. Otago was represented by Messrs A.' Cameron, I<\ S. Arthur, and W. - Brown, and Christ-' church by Messrs G. H. Halted, W. G. Wright, and H. C. Kent.;' The judges were Messrs Peter Barr, F. B.' Adams, and J. Jl • Tregear. - Th'o Canterbury students supported free trade and the Otago representatives argued in favour of protection. Mr Barr delivered the judgment. Ho. congratulated the six speakers on the general effectiveness of their speaking, and also upon the serious manner in wiich they had handled the subject. There was perhaps a lack of'clfectivoiiess caused by too close attention to their notes. The system of arriving at a conclusion had been based on a scries of marks for matter and method, arrangement, pronunciation, gesture, and so on. The Canterbury speakers had obtained 214 marks and th'o Otago speakers 176. The first prize (two guineas) would go to Mr Wright, and the second prizo (one guinea) to Mr Halted.' Mr Wright had arranged the matter much better' than the other five speakers; it was very-well thought out.

Tho' filling- up our empty spaces, , . Is an urgent problem now, Dusky, 'alien, heathen races WBitc Australians won't allow. We must strive, by every measure Our Dominion to assure, And instruct each child to treasure Health and Woods' Great Peppermint Cure. .61
