BANGIORA. J Tho members of the Young Helpers' j League in connexion with Dr. Bar- | nardo's Homes were entertained on Friday evening in the Methodist schoolroom by the Mayoress (Mrs F. B. Lane), who is a vice-president of the League. A very pleasant evening was spent in games, songs, and musical items, and an address was also given by the Rev. W. H. Howes. During the evening the silver medals of the society, given for those who had collected os and over a year for five years were presented to Master Athol Stalker and Miss Evelyn Lane. LEESTON. Mr "W. 0. Rennie (president) presided over a meeting of* tho Ellesmere A. and P. Association's Ploughing Match Committee, held at Leeston, on Friday, and there was a good attendance. Friday, July 22nd, was the date fixed upon for the annual match, and it was decided to accept the offer of Mr G. M. Lochhead, of" the use of two of his paddocks fronting the LcestonI.akesidc road, near Leeston. The programme drawn up was as follows: Class A, open D.F., coulter cut, standard cast shares; class Si, District D.F., coulter cut, standard cast shares; class 0, open D.F., coulter cut, standard cast shares, youths under 18; class D, District 3-F., coulter cut, standard cast shares; class E, open 3-F., coulter cut, standard cast shares. A proposal to include a "cut as you please'' class was defeated. The secretary was instructed to call tender's for luncheon booth. The tender of Mr "W. C. Shilton, of Leeston. has been accepted by the Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board for the cartage of poles for its electric [ lines. Some of the poles have already arrived. The Rev. R. M. Ryburn lias consented to conduct services in the Leeston Presbyterian parish on Juno 26th, when the church roll of honour is xo be unveiled. ; 'An Evening with George "Eliot," was the subject for tho meeting of Leeston "Wesley Guild on Thursday, at which there was a good attendance. An interesting paper on the life and works of the famous authoress was given by Mrs Laycock. Selections froih the works of George Eliot were given by Mrs <G. 11. Barnett, Misses MabH Elide, Hilda Barnett, and Parkin, atid Messrs Lester Eade, L. W. Hewitt, aid R, Barnett. A \*ote of thanks was accorded the performers, and supper was served by lady members. • / On the occasion of a very enjoyable and excellently attended social evening, held m the Catholic Hall, Leeston, the" church choir made a presentation of an afternoon tea service to Mr; Edward 11. "Winter, to mark tho occasion of his marriage, The Rev. Father. Creed, parish priest, in handing the gift to Mr Winter, wished the recipient and his bride every happiness in'their married life. Mr Winter made a suitable acknowledgment. A progressive euchre tournament took place, the first prize-winners being Miss Rose O'Boyle and Mr Lafferty. After supper a dance was held, Mrs R. Lambio being tho musician. Under the auspices of the Ellesmero Technical Association, two very interesting lectures have been given to the home-nursing classes at Brookside and Sedgemere, by Dr. Ick Hewins, on the cellular structure of the human body, with particular reference to the functions of each of the different varieties of cells. The lecturer was particularly interesting on tho work of the blood cells, "thagocites," or white corpuscles. Dr. Hewins, who. was accorded votes of thanks, will give a second lecture at Brookside next Friday. Dr. Rosa Collier, school medical officer; of the Education Department, visited Leeston school on Thursday. The teeth, nose, and throat ov every child were examined, and a note was maile of any abnormal condition. . During the

afternoon Dr. Collier addressed a number of parents on the care of the teeth, diet, importance of fresh air, and bathing. Special reference was made' 'to school lunches, and a circular issued by the Chief-Medical Officer for the guidance of parents was read. Dr. Collier said she "would visit the district again shortly, and give a lecture to parents in the evening. SOUTHBRIDGE. There was a very good attendance-'nt a euchre- .tournament and dance held by the Southbridge Football Club. The. first prizes for euchre were won by Mrs Schnelle and Mr J. McClure, and .the consolation prizes went to Miss Schnelle and Mr G. Ridden. The ladies served supper, and Mrs Delargey played for the dr.nce. KILLINCHY. A large number of people assembled at the Killinchy school on Friday night, on the occasion of tho annual social in' connexion with the .Presbyterian Sunday school. The Rev. E. W. Walkerpresided. In addition to items by the children, the following performers from Dunsandel, assisted: Mrs MeGill, Misses Reid (2), M. Stainger, and Chatterton, and Mr A. J. -Sheat. Rev. J. S. Reid gave an address. Each of tho teachers received a special prize, given by Mr F. J. Lemon, who was accorded a rote- of. thanks.
