The increasing use of oil fuel lends special interest to a .British device for measuring at any instant the amount of oil in the fuel tank. It consists of a bell-like chamber on the bottom of the tank connected with a hand-operated air pump. When the pump is worked it increases the air pressure in the chamber until it overcomes the pressure of the liquid and allows bubbles, to escape. As the pressure of the liquid depends upon its depth, the air pressure thus produced by the pump is a measure of the depth. A gauge is provided to register the air pressure, and it Kin be marked to give direct readings of the.depth. The air pump and gauge can b© pLaced at a. distance froni the tank, and will give accurate readings tinder all conditions o£. the tempenvturo.
