(Received February 2nd, 9 15 p.m.) MOBART, February 2. The Governor-General, while competing in a yacht race at Hobart regatta, slipped and wrenched his knee. Ho wdl be compelled to cancel has visit to' Launceston. Mr Charles Ellis Davies, managing director of "Tho Mercury," who recently xisited the Canadian Press Conference, died suddenly in a motor-car, en route to Launceston to attend a racemeeting. He was seventy-four years of age. BRISBANE, February 2. Mr E. G. Theodore, tho Premier, states that the Tramway Company's claim for compensation is excessive, and no business can be done on that basis. He was unable to say wtfiat would bo the next step. It is understood that the claim involves £3,000.000. SYDNEY, February 2. The prohibition rally at the Tnwni Ball passed a resolution of emphatio protest against tho postponement of tho referendum, declaring that tho action was unconstitutional, undemocratic, and an example of lawlessness to bo strongly condemned. A feature of the demonstration was the reading l>y the chairman of a letter from Mr Holman, wishing the meeting success, supporting them, and condemning a Government which flouted the law.
