GEADING OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS.
4 A epecial meeting of the Rangiora High School Board was iield yesterday afternoon to meet Messrs D. Jones and G. W. Forbes, M.P.'s, and to place before them anomalies in the new regulations for the grading , and salaries of (secondary school teachers. There were present Metsra W. A. Banks (.hairman), 0. I. Jennings, J. Marshall, C. W. Bell, H. Boyd, and iJ. Ball. The principal of the Echool was. also present. Mr J. E. Strachan emphasised tho fact that they were not complaining , about the salaries, but the system. The capitation allowance ■under -which the country secondary echoole wore graded was unfair, the amount of f2 Wβ per capita, might cover the expenses of j a. town aehool, but it was impossible to | keep up' a country school euch as the Kangiora High School on tho amount. Another feature of the failure of the echome was in the failing to pay tho principal according to his aocademio qualifications, but the" chief cause of complaint -was the reducing of tho ealary of the first assistant teacher of a email echool. Mr Strachan fully explained the advantages of the 6yctem I to large town, schools, but said it was detrimental U> the interests of country schools, Tha standard of the work expected in the country echools was the same aa that expected from large city schools, and in tho city schools the teachers taught one subject-only, as against a vast number, of subjects as taught by the country teacher, and a country teacher had to be in a position to teach any *6ubject. Both Messrs Jonee and Forbes congratulated the principal on placing the position eo clearly before them, as it applied to the country echool. They admitted that the position was very unfair, and would do their beet to have the complnints enquired into and tho anomalies removed. y lrtr .
