BOWLING.

(.NOTES BY "SKIP.") The entries for the Dominion tournament closed in "Wellington on Thursday night, but so far nothing has been henrd. as to tho' number, of rinks or pairs likely to take part. From enquiries mado amongst players in the different clubs in town there arc very few indeed who will be able to take part in ; the pairs games. Nearly every bowler complains about tho length of time he would be absent from business were ho : to take part in more than tho rinks, and it is a matter for regret that our bowling legislators did not give the matter more serious consideration. "When the delegates from tfae Centres moot tho Council in "Wellington during tournament time, I .can imagine that some very hard things will bti said, but it may be the means of clearing tho air and making things easior for the next Council when it takes officc. The dates for tho different events at the Association Tournament are as follows: —Rinks start on January 10th, the pairs on January 19th, and the singles on January 24t)i. The soldiers who are now in the Queen Mary Hospital at. Hanmer are wholly neurasthenic patients. In such quiet surroundings, their recreation is somewhat limited, but a large number of the patients 'have developed a big liking for bowls. They havo a* first-class preen, but no bowls, and it is thought that a few retired bowlers might not object to giving their old bowls in a good cause. The' 1 secretary of tho Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr \V. E. Leadley, will be pjeased to receive any such donations.

Although Beekenham have to dati only notched two wins in tho Pennan r .•ompetitions, they have in all matche provided exceedingly interesting games \gainst St. Albans they were beaten b; onl.v one point. On Saturday las' i gainst U mted they won two games both being vers* evenly contested, Cheg ,vin won from Dr. -Vfarks on the las: lead, scoring the four required to win Bot.t also scored two on-the last head which placed him one point ahead o: Thompson in their match. The plaj throughout was of the highest order the greah being particularly keen anc accurat#. "Measurer," in Dxmedin "Star/ 1 hai the following interesting paragraph A letter received by n local player frorr a brother hi Kent (Eng.), says: "1 send you a paper with note of one oi rny bowls games at Hastings. The i;amo (pairs) lasted 3h 20m. Orchard, the New Zealand man. skipped against mo. Once we lay 5, wncn his last wood :anie down like greased lightning and -ent the jack and half the woods into the next rink, and smashed up theii ;n<l. Again, when we lay 3 and 1, h? aid the same, so we had to replay three snds. At the last end we were 2 down, but I got 2 in touching the jack, 'and that made us level. In the extra ond ■«ve" got' in good woods, but they sot the odd point. Occasionally skittling is done iiere, but nothing like Orchard's, who comes from Christchurch. It is allowed, but tho general opinion was that if that is tho way bowls are played in New Zealand we don't want it here, its it puts drawing out of court." Bowling may be "an old man's game," but the son sometimes beats the Father at it. Such an incident occurred at an Old Country tournament held at Pwllheli (more easily written than pronounced), when Mr F. T>avies (of Manchester) defeated his father by 21 to 16 in the final of the Challenge Cup. The members of the Onawa Club are now hurrying their champion events along, the sccond round of which closes l-o-day. The following matches have rWT>Ti rlnmn*»rl * Champion Singles:-W. M. Barton, who has retired from fciie Bank of New Zealand, was one of the most consistent piaj-ers of the Rangiora Club, and took part in all the club matches. He has taken up his residence for a short time at Papanui, but will still play for his club durin" the remainder of the season. The Rangiora club has been most unfortunate during the last two or three years in losing, l?v removal?, most of their prominent players, especially tbelr skips and thirds, and this season lias bt-en no exception, with W. Efford in England, F. Sharp in Australia, and 1. R. Cresswell in Wellington, and J. B. Cressr/ell in Now Plymouth besides, the Hon. D. Buddo, J. Josling, and ~ in Christchurch, the club finds a difficulty in putting pood skips into the field; however, the cluo has some very promising members who are doin-r their best, and really have done well this season for the club.
