METROPOLITAN TROTTING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING

NEW ZEALAND CUP DAY

The Now Zealand Metropolitan Trottin" Club will open its Spring Meeting* to-dny, and this most important fixture promises to produce by far tiio be«t result yet achieved on the Metropolitan course. Since the first ■ Meetin" was held at- Addington in lSt-9, the li°ht harness sport has made rapid strides. In ISS9 tho club gave for a two-days' Meeting, tiie principal race being *ortli £120 i and[tho minor events £30 each lor tho present Meeting, which extends over t iree davs the handsome sum of ~ n, - 3 1)0 distributed, the chief attraction bciU the New Zealand Trotting Cup, Sowed with £2300, while there » £ race on the programme worth less tnnn £300. Visitors from Australia and au nirts of the Dominion have alreadj .Arrived in the city, and tho attendance should be a record ono, wiailo the racng promises to be of the high standard usually seen at headquarters. Ot tho eight races on the card, the JN cw Zealand Trotting Cup will easily monopolise most attention from those prosent, and with such a fino field likely to face ifiio starter, the race will not bo won without a hard and keen struggleDuring the past week the unexpected has happened to more than one candidate, and of the sixteen carded, Q™ field is likely to bo considerably reduced. John Dillon has broken down. Dean Dillon hue contracted t'hroat trouble, Cello Sydney recently fell on tho road and cut his knees, Hal Junior is amiss, and Moneymaker has not sufficiently recovered from tho cold he contracted a few weeks ago. Author Dillon, on scratch, holds pride of Piaco, and is likelv to start favourite; he has come through a searching preparation, and is expected by his connexions to put up a great fight for supremacy, but tho task before him is a hard one. and should ho prove equal to the occasion nobody will begrudge him his second success in tho big handicap. MsPointer, last year's winner, and bhorwood, her stable mate, havo doiio all that hns been asked of them,, and Free Holmes's elect looks like taking a prominent part in the settlement of affairs. Matehlight and Erin's Queen, iroin Oakhampton Lodge, are sure to imd) favour with the public, and their trainer, J. Bryce, is quito confident that both his candidates will run well* Tho Onjma-ru-owned and trained 'Albert Cling has recent form in his favouT ; he is nicely treated, and only requires to be in the humour"to finish in tho money. Tho New Brighton stables arc represented by General Link, Willie Lincoln, and the' champion trotter Reta Peter. The first-named two are very well at present, and should add interest to tho race, but it is doubtful if Reta Peter will act to advantage in the early stages of tho race against so many speedy pacers, while tho remaining candidates, Mintson and Steel Bell, have little to recommend them for a race of this description. The grounds are looking at their best for this time of tho year, and the spring flowers and well-grassed lawns will doubtless find favour with the public. The club has recently made new arrangements for increased motor and vehicular traffic, which ihnve been freely advertised of late. With the track in its present first-class condition, tho times will bo fast, and tho -placed horses will doubtless be found improving considerably on their present handicaps. Special trams will run to and from the course at short intervals during the day, and the first race will start at 11.3.5 a.m. Tho following is the programme:— 11.35 a.m.—SPEING- HANDICAP (in harness), of 300 eov3.
