SERIOUS OUTBREAK OF FIRE.

SOUTH WING DESTROYED,

Our special correspondent- at Oamaru telephoned at 2.40 a.m. that there was a serious outbreak of fire in the W aitaki Boys' High. School buildings: The fire had a strong liold of the south wing, lu which the class-rooms wero situated. The roof had fallen in and tho apparatus and furnishings were being removed from the Science Room. The school buildings aro situated outside the territory for which tho Oamaru Fire Brigade is responsible, but the members of the brigade were assisting in fighting the- fire, although they were without tho aid of a pumping engine. The water supply at tho school is quite inadequate to copo with an outbreak of sucli magnitude. The boys, of whom about 200 are in residence at the school, were reported to bo all safe. They had only returned this week after the term holidays. A light southerly wind was blowing, assisting the firo in its progress to the other portions of tho buildings. At the timo of telephoning it was difficult to estimate tho chances of saving other parts of the block.
