TRAMWAY BOARD.
rOETKIGHTLY MEETING.
The Christohureh. Tramway Board mot yesterday afternoon. Present: Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C. (chairman), and Messrs S. A. Staples, D. Sykes, W. J. Waiter, J. "\Voocl, A. S. Taylor, and H. Pearce. Apologies wore received from Messrs G. T. Booth and T. E. Dvrvey.
A letter from the South Brighton Progress League, asking when tbe extension to Jervois street would be started, was referred fco the engineer. Tho Dunedin City Council wrote asking the Board to endorse its protest against taxing the income of local bodies' trading departments. Tho chairman, while saying it would do no harm to endorse tho motion, expressed tho opinion that the clause referred to would bo deleted from tho Bill.
Mr Taylor favoured tho principle, provided th.it ifc was accompanied by the jpaymcnt of rates to_ local authorities bv" Government institutions. Mr Staples expressed the 'view that "when tho Government is preparod to pay taxes, let them tax us." It was decided to approve the Dunedin Council!s proposition. The resolutions passed at the provi' ous meeting in connexion witli the National Provident fund were confirmed.
jir Staples, asked when a roporfc would bo brought down concerning tho necessity for bringing tho Hornby bus into town each night, and sending it back the followihg morning, which he considered a needless waste of material, and ' tyres, as the bus could quite easily bo kept at Sockburn. 4 Jt was stated that a report wotild be presented at tho next meoting Of the Board.
The "Works and Traffic Committee reported in regard to tho conversion of ekctric cars, that six wero completed and ono v.'as in hand, leaving three yet to do. Ten cars were completed in coupled car equipments, one was in hand, leaving two to do. Thirtoen trucks for new trailers had arrived, and three had been set up to receive the bodies of old elcctric cars. In regard to new elcctric cars, threo bodies of tho "Hill" typo were finished, and onp would _be delivered to-day. Tho work of relaying tho Stanmore road and Burwood line was progressing satisfactorily. The last mils had gone out, and would reach North Parade, when the work- must stop for want of material. Good progress was also being made with other works,
