WAR MEMORIAL.
UNVEILING AT ESK VALLEY. Recently a monument to tho district's ; fallen Boldiers was unveiled at Esk Valley. ■ The ceromonv was witnessed by over 200 people, drawn from Geraldin© to beyond Wsimate. The monument consists of a rough cairn of boulders on which rests a pedestal and obelisk of polished grey granite. It was erected by es-pupils of the Esk Valley School to tho memory of their fallen schoolmate*. On the side "of the pedestal fronting tho main road is embossed the following:—"ln memory of ex-pupils of Ebk Valley School, who gave their lives in tho great war, 19H- - 13IS. Sergeant H. J. Bruce, Gallipoli, 1015; Trooper S. E. Bassett, Gallipoli, 1915; Private R. D. Copland, Sommc, l&G; Private H. A. Morris. France, 191 C; Rifleman G. R. Marshall, Messines, 1917; Lance-Corporal G> F. Alexander, France, 1917; Private J. Anderson,- France, 1917; Sergeant P. Campbell, France, 1917; Signaller S. T. Hampton, France, 191T"; Private G. A. Morris, France, 1918; Trooper B. L. Hampton, Egypt. 1918. Their name liveth for evermore.' " On the side facing the road to Kohika is inscribed; —"From "Kohika; Rifleman TV. J. Kicol, France, 1918." Jilrs Morris, the oldest pioneer of the district, who had lost two sons in tho war, performed tho unveiling ceremony, after which the Rev. E. K. Mules 'ed in pjrayer and the singing of "Abide With Me." After the sounding of "The Last Post" an adjournment* waa made to tho school, where Mr # J. G. Gow, ex-inspector of schools for South Canterbury, -unveiled a roll of honour. A stirring address jou citizenship was given by tho Rev. Mr Usher. The "roll," arranged by Mrs C. C. Smithson, and presented by her to the Bchool, consists of thirty-eight photcpraphs of the boys who had left for tho war. Underneath each is inscribed hie no-mo and reinforcement, and in the case of those killed where and when he fell. In a central oval axo the Union Jack and New Zealand flags, witli the inscription: "For King and Country, 1914-1918." Th» names are:— H. J. Bruce, S. E. Baseeti R. Sutherland, J. F. Ryan, H. C.
