FOOTBALL.

y SYDNEY UNIVERSITY TEAM. The Sydney University football team, woa entertained at tho Beresford Tea Rooms yesterday aiternoon by the members of the Canterbury Students' Association at afternoon tea. Mr A. R. Blank presided over a large atendance, which included a good number of lady students. In a brief speech Mr Blank spoke of the excellence of the visitors as footballers, as shown in their play on Saturday. Incidentally, Mr Blank urged all University players to do their best for Rugby when they themselves had finished their football careers, and to do their best also in the interests of inter-rTJniversity tournaments, and inter-colonial visits. Mr J. M6rgan, captain of the Sydpey team, said that the members of the team would never forget the warmth of the reception they had experienced in New Zealand and especially in Chriatchurch. jtr L. Penlington (secretary or the Stu-, dents' Association) thanked all those who had billetted and entertained the visitors, and the lady members of the University, who had done so much to make the stay of the Sydney men a pleasant one. Hiss Taylor briefly responded for the ladies, and Mr H. Goldsmith, of the Sydney team,'also eaid a few words in, appreciation of the efforts of the ladies and of the heartiness of the welcome geneially accorded to the team in Christchurch. The team and the southern members of the New Zealand team to take part in tomorrow's test match in "Wellington, left for the North by the ferry boat last night, and were given a very hearty send-off by a large crowd at the Christchurch Railway Station. Tho following will represent Canterbury against Wanganui on Saturday:—Evans, McLeod, O'Malley, Ford, Boag, McCormick, Fitzgerald, Carnegie, Hasell, Munro, Hendereon Peterson Collins Ellis, Parker j emergencies McCleary, Jackson, Henry, Wilson, and Blackmore. In the League match, Poneonby (23) beat Federal, CLxistchurch (19). CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the committee of Management of the Canterbury Football Association was held last evening, Mr R. English, presiding. The Canterbury Rugby League wrote expressing its appreciation of the services of Messrs* English, Knight, Eastgate, Bunt, and Rhodes to the League at the match between Wellington and Canterbury at English Park on August 28th. In connexion with the same match tho League forwarded a cheque for £16 7s 6d, being 25 per cent, of the proceeds. . . The Rugby League-was granted permission to use English Park on Saturday next for the final of its third- grade competition, and the final of its senior "knock-out" competition. A request for the use of the Park for the junior representative Leajgue match between Canterbury and the West Coast on September 18th was regretfully declined, as the Park will be in use on that day 'for Association representative matches. The Boys' Gordon Hall Club lodged a complaint against the Linwood Club for having plaved three unregistered players in a recent third grade match against Boys' Gordon Hall. It was decided to ask tho Linwood Club to furnish ,an explanation at the next meeting of the committee.
