BOROUGH COUNCILS.

WOOLSTON. The Woolston Borough Council met last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr Chas. Hilt), and Cw. J. C. Hobson, L. Hart, G. S. White, G. T. Owen, and W. R. Blazey. The" report of the town clerk, which wad adopted, stated that one 'building permit hadi been issued to.the.value of £700. Eight connexions had been made to the electric mains. The Electricity Committee reported that) eince the last report three houses had been wired, at a ooet of £61 6s 4d, und were in hand for wiring eleven houses. The report was adopted". It was decided to refer ft claim for £160 from Mr A. Howard in re3pect of the nightsoil contract to the borough solicitors. It was decided to grant the town, clerk (Mr W. V. Siddall) salary in lieu of holidays which he had not taken. The resignation of Mr W. Wilson, borough electrician, was accepted, and it was decided' to write thanking him for his past services. , An application from Mr C. D. The electrical engineer, Public Works Department, Christchurch, -wrote stating that the Department was willing to renew the electrioal agreement on the following conditions; —The agreement to bo made for three years; that the Council agrees to increase the rate for all 600 watt ironing points on double throw switches now being charged at Is to the Department's rate of 26; that the Council agrees to increase the rate for all GOO-watt general point on double throw switches now being charged at 2s, to the Department's rate of 4a; that the rate for the k.w. point bo increased from 24a to 28s per quarter; that the rate for ejich 2 k.w. point be increased from 48s to EGs; oil other rates to be in accordance with the existing agreement. The letter was reoeived, and it was decided to refer it to the Electrical Committee* SUMNER. The Stunner Borough Council met last night. Prosent—The Mayor (Hon. John Borr), Crs. C. M. Roswell, F. Gill, C. Benjamin, H. J. Yates, W. G. Black, H. C- Jamieson, and T. E. Whitfield. Correspondence was reoeived from the Ministre of Education acknowledging the Court cil's resolution in connexion with grants towards technical education, and stating that ho agreed- with the resolution—Received. The Standing Committee's report stated, that repairs had boon carried out to the west end of Nayland street. Metal had been placed on the main road. The and water channels at Redcliffs had received attention. Repairs had been effected, to the Estuary road, sea wall. The recent heavy seas had damaged the sea wall at Bell's boat harbour. The report was adopted. It was decided to re-erect the poets on the Esplanade at the corner of Head street. It was agreed to take but an accident insurance policy covering the members of the Lifeboat Brigade while on brigade duty. The Sumner Fire Brigade was granted ai refund of £1 17s 6d, being amount of hall rent paid in connexion with its annual social. The Defence Departipent notified, that two machine-guns had been allocated to Sumner. Advice was received that an Order-in-Coun-cil would be published authorising the Council to pay 5b per cent, interest on the gas and electric light loans. Mr J. H. Reay was appointed sanitary inspector for the borough. It was agreed to purchase land for the purpose of erecting a reservoir, and a sub-com-mittee, consisting of the Mayor, Cr. Jamieson, the town clerk, and engineer, was with £ower to act in regard to the piucbaee and also in regard to the construction of the reservoir and the purchase of materials and machinery. Cr. Black urged the necessity of pushing oil the work of tarring the footpaths. The Mayor explained that the work would bo pushed forward, but it was a case of weather, men, and material. A 6ub-committee, consisting of Crs. Roswell, Black, and Whitfield, was appointed to go into the question of providing gas points for heating hot water on the beach, and also other questions affecting visitors to the borough. Cr. Whitfield spoke of the state the Tramway Board left the roads in after effecting repairs. The Mayor explained that the Tramway Board were purchasing two more rollers, and when these arrived the repair work would bo concentrated on. The Mayor referred to the departure from, the borough of the town clerk, Mr C. Dcsb, and etiited that the affairs of the borough were in a far better position than ever previously through Mr Dash's efforts. He wished the departing town clerk prosperity and luck in his new sphere of action. Cr., Whitfield (chairman of works) also spoke eulogising Mr Dash's work. * -
