Description of Land. —Tho land ivailable for leas© is situated on the north-east side of Vitilevu island, and is bounded on the east and north-east by the se.a coast and Vitilevu Bay. On the north by the slopes of a mountain range. On the south-west by irregular lines or crests of ridges. On the south and south-east by a creek and spur ridges. Through tho block fiom west to south iims the Wainibuka river, which stream eventually reaches the 6ca en the' south-east coast of the isJand, and is known as' the R-ewa river. The stream is navigable foT small punts southwaids from a point about the centre of tho block. The greater portion of tho block offered for lease is drained by the main river and its tributaries, the balance by streams running to the eea coast. Between the sea coaet and the main river valley lies a ridgo rising about 1300 feet, which is steep and rocky, but is> covered with reeds, grass, and scattered timber. On the south-west, lies a ridge from about COO feet to 1000 feet high, covered with and grass, and but little rock. On the rorth the land gradually slopes up .from the jiver valley to a .range about. 2500 feet high, the upper slopes of which are timbered, and may be included in a leaee at the lessee's option. The main valley is gently undulating country, and low ridges rising to the _ higher ground on either aide. A considerable area of the valley may be ploughed. The soil ranges from "good black on the flats and low slopes, through brown to red. The red soil is the poorest, and is insignificaat in extent compared with the whole area. At least three-quarters of the block is open country, covered with reeds and natural grasses. The balance is cpen timber country, with reeds and grasses, with a patch of about nine square miles of ordinary forest. Within the block lie about forty native villages, around which suitable areas will be reserved for plantation purposes. About BJOO acres of laii'l have been alienated, The largest holding contains 6174 acres, and is used as a cattle run. The balance available foi lease is estimated to contain about 88,000 acres.
