HOENBY-ISLINGTON.

Over £13 was netted as a result of a ' euchre party and dance held in the Islington H-.1l in connexion with the Queen competition, which is being run in conjunction with the Catholic bazaar in the iving Edward iiarracKs during August. Owing to the large number of pupils absent from the school on account of sickness, the committee is considering the advisability of closing the school for a time. . 1 A very enjoyable social was held under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild in the parish room, Hornby. During tho evening ine following presentations wero made to the Vicar (the Rev. G. W. Harding), on the occasion of his marriage. A Morris chair from St. Oolumba's congregation, and a Doulton honey-jar from the Sundav-schcol teachers and children. A programme of musical and other items was given by the following:—Mesdames Richards and Eadio, Misses Bryce and Cooper, and Messrs Gardiner, Withers, M. Perry, E. Brassington, and A. Hunt. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Richards. Supper was provided by the ladies. BANGIORA. The quarterly meeting of the Rangiora Methodist" Circuit was held on : Thursday, the Rev. J. Guy presiding. ; The financial statement disclosed a very : satisfactory state of affairs. It was decided to increase the stipends of mm- , isters as recommended by the stewards. ' Owing to the increasing difficulty of; fulfilling appointments by local preach- ■ ers through lack of vehicles, it was decided to subsidise where necessary any preacher who had to find outside means of conveyance to keep appointments. The reports of the various Church organisations were deemed very satistac- ; tory. The Sunday school superinten- : dents reported an increase in scholars in most of the schools, and that the local organiser had paid a visit to the district and reported very favourably on the work of tho scholars. KIRWEE. The newlv-formed Social Club held its first meeting on Wednesday m tho Orange Hall, over forty ladies and gentlemen being present. A progressive euchre tournament was held, the prizewinners being Miss L>. Rout and Mr J. Marshall, whiist Miss J. McKie and Mr C. Williams received the "b.oby" prizes. A meeting'of the Ploughing Match Committee was held on Wednesday, Mr F. Westaway presiding. Several paddocks were offered, and a selection will | be made later. It was decided, to hold ; the match on August 3rd, and to give gold medals to the winners in all classes, in addition to the money prizes. WAIPAKA. On Friday last the residents of Waipara held a social and dance for the purpose of meeting Mr and Mrs Baker, to recognise their many services during tho war. The function was held in Mr J. C. T. Baker's hall, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion by Mr and Mrs W. Taylor. Mr and Mi's Baker were tho recipients of a silver tea service and hot-water jug, and Mr Baker of a silver cigarette case. The Rev. Canon Purchas made the presentations, after which dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Mrs W. Cole, of VVaiau. Mr T. Knowles acted as M.C. LADBEOOKS. The -weather during the week has been suitable for all farm wcrk. Potatodigging is still going on, and cereal crops are going in, principally wheat and oats. Large quantities of chaff and potatoes have been sent forward lately. A meeting of the settlers of Ladbrooks was lield in the Town Hall in connexion with the post and telephone bureau. The committee appointed submitted a report which, after discussion, was adopted, and a sub-committee was appointed to arrange and control all matters appertaining to the local service. Under the supervision of Mr and Mrs Brown, the settlers are assured that every attention will be given to them ; in common with postal and telephonic facilities. EAKAIA. The monthlv meeting of the Rakaia branch of the W.C.T.U. was presided over by Mrs Bnag. There was an exceptionally good attendance of members. A letter was received from the provincial secretary asking for delegates to be appointed to the annual conference at New Brighton. Mrs England and Mrs Hunt were appointed delegates. A discussion took place on the question of inviting the conference to meet next year at Rakaia, but the matter was adjourned to another meeting. The treasurer reported a balance of £1 15s 2d in hand. ■ On Thursday evening a very successful danco washeld in the Rakaia Town Hall. There was a good number present, visitors coming from as far afaeld as Mitcham and Done. The music was provide by Wells's band, which comprised three instruments. The floor was in capital order, and dancing was kept iip till 2 a.m. Mr A. Oliver made an efficient M.C. No tickets were sold, but sufficient door-money was taken to enable the committee to hand over £5 to the Rakaia Soldiers' Memorial Fund. At tho weekly shoot >of the Rakaia Miniature Rifle Club, a sweepstake competition was fired and won by TV: E. Judkins, with a score of 69, of which 68 were off the rifle. H. Hewson was runner-up with a score of 68 from scratch. These two also tied for' the club "Hotty" button, but Hewson, being the holder, retained it. Other scores the same evening were W. C. Tritt 67, and G. Cromie 67. At the monthly meeting of the Rakaia School Committee there were present the Rev. A. S. Morrison (chairman), Rev. E. Blakiston, Messrs: A. F. llennett, and C. Shannon. The headmaster's report showed a roll number of 150, and an average attendance of 122. The attendance had been much interfered with by the influenza epidemic. It was resolved they join the Ashburton School Committee's Associa-' tion. In regard to the new school it was decided to meet at the schoolgrourld on Saturdny to discuss the layout of tho grounds.

LOBTJEN. I The returned soldiers of Loburn hold tlieir annual dance in the Coronation Hall, which <vas nicely decorated with coloured streamers, native palms, evergreens, and holly. Music was provided i by Miss Eder's orchestra, and Mr C. i Hopkins acted as M.C. The supperroom was also prettily decorated, and ! an excellent repast was served, presided over by Mesdames Saxton and Hot>- ; kins. Extras were played by Misses Shaw, Joyce, and Bailey, and Messrs i Jcyce and IX Kennedy. Lance-Corporal Arthur Leslie Cooper, oldest son of Mr and Mrs Cooper, of the Loburn school, died at the Cashmere Military Sanatorium, on Monday, June 28th, and was accorded a military funeral at the Sydenham Cemetery, on Thursday, July Ist. Many' beautiful wreaths were placed on the coffin, amongst them being one from the pupils of the Loburn District j School, with whom the late soldier was | a great favourite. Much sympathy is; felt for Mr and Mrs Cooper, in their j bereavement. j
