A PRESSING DIFFICULTY. • A conference of representatives of local bodies in the Christchuich district was held last night to consider tho matter of thocolloction and disposal of niglnsoil in the unsewerei portion of the city, and in districts surrounding the city. ~,_,_ , , The Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. W. Beaniand, presided. "'ilio Deputy-Mayor said tho present position was far froin satisfactory, and complaints were coming into- tho City Council daily. The Council, however, intended to inaugurate its own scheme, but it wou.d bo some little time before the necessary gear arrived The contractor's trouble was that of wages for his men. The City Council had already "rant&l tho contractor a 10 per cent, increase "on the original price, and he recommended that an additional 15 per cent, increase be granted. A statement put in set out that the men were asking £1 per night, and that the contractor would require to be paid at tho uniform rate of 25s por pan. Ii the local bodies could not grant the increase he would be willing to hand over all his gear _for a small charge, tho local bodies to find the labour.
