TRENTHAM TRAINING NOTES. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") WELLINGTON, July • 9,. Rain fell overnight and early this morning at Trentham, but not sufficient to affect the going. Being what is termed an off morning, only the tan and inside grass circuits wero open to trainers. Gold Kip, "who appears in great heart, centered a couple of circuits. Other members of A. C. Cox's team did easy pacing. Locliella. cantexed a circuit, on the inner grass and a couple of rounds on tho tan. His supporters for the Steeplechase will be relieved to know that his trainer C. Christie, has arranged for Lochella to jump the big fences to-morrow morning. It may,* therefore, be concluded that, provided the weather keeps all right, the horse will run in the Steeplechase. The over-night arrivals to put in an appearance included Guanaco, in charge of W. Stone, and All Cerise and Admyra,. in charge of T. Long. Guanaco will piobably run in the hack and hnntsrs' event. Slowcoach, and Mentmore did three rounds of the tan at a good swinging pace. Dainty Step, Spangel, and others were ridden by W. O'Halloran, who has joined J. Ayres's stables. • The Hawke's Bay contingent got as far as WoodviUe last night, and will conclude the journey to-day. Arch Salute, Meltchikoff, Walton, and Notability did useful work. Thrace and Prince Charleroi are expected at Trentham to-day. S. Henderson has Ixcn engag-ed to ride the first-named in the .Winter Hurdle's. He will also be on John Bunny in the Steeplechase. Kauri King is eypected to' arrive at Trentham to-day from Hastings. TOTALISATOR PERMITS. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, July 9. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. G. J. Anderson), replying to a deputation representing Wellington sporting bodie?, asking for an extra day's racing for the Wellington Ttotting Club, which only has one day, said that his advice to the racing" authorities was to set their house in order, and to redistribute their- pcrmit3 more fairly before there was a request for more days' racing. Ho already had between 30 and 40 ap.plications for- extra permits, i There w?s a large force in the circles outside sporting which said that gambling was I increasing to a very large extent. Ho said j this as a sporting enthusiast himself. ASH3*OETON TSOTTTNG CLUB. ANNUAL MEETTNG. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club was held last night, the acting-

chairman, Mr D. McDonnell, presiding over a good attendance.

The committee, in its report, congratulated members on the hi:jn position the club had now attained, its increasing popularity, and progress in every respect. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a. sound financial rosition, as, notwithstanding" the increase in the stakes, and the substantial reduction made by 'he committee in the acceptance fees, a fair profit wm made. Xo doubt the balance would have been larger if the weather had been propitious on Boxing' Day. As in the past, the Boxing Day Mooting- resulted in a loss, but this wa3 due to the heavy 6t>u'-wc-ster which visited the course on that day. There 'was a very large attendance of visitors at the commencement of the meeting, but the rough weather soon drove a large irumbjr homewards. The Winter fixture was probably the most successful ever held by the club. The stakes given (£2000) were the largest yet offered by any country racing- or trotting club in the Dominion for a one-day meeting. The race, for the New Zealand Saplinj Stakes was again a great success, and the public took a keen interest in the contest. Thanks were due to Mr A. F. Smith, who generously preserved a valuable cup to the winner. The chib had. now a large membership but during the <ieason it hud lost the services of two of it 3 officials —Mr Forsyth, who held the position of vice-presidentt, had now removed from the district, and Mr W. B. Denshire, who died. The latter gentleman was for several years a steward and manifested much interest in the welfare of the' club.
