OBITUARY.

MR J. E. DAVENPCTtT

Mr James E. Davenport, Allandale, Governor's Bay, who died on Sunday last after an iflness of upwards of four years, was born in 1851 at Hawkshult, Brewood, Staffordshire, and came out to New Zealand about thirty years years ago. After spending a. couple ol years at Longbeach he went to Hawke's Bay and interested himself in stock breeding. Subsequently ho^ visited England, and returned to New Zealand with a shipment of pedigree stock, much of which has made a name for itself throughout the Dominion. Mr Davenport made several trips to the Old Country, and brought out stock on each occasion. In 1910 he collected a large number of sheep and horses, and in company -with other breeders went to Buenos -Ayres for the Pastoral Exhibition, meeting with a fair amount of success, considering tho restrictions placed on all stock landed in that country. Whilst there, Mr Davenport was called upon to judge tho Essex and Devon cattle and the Romney Marsh sheep, and was complimented _by tho president for the general satisfaction that he had given to the numerous competitors. From South America ho went to England, and collected more stock, including the celebrated hackney stallion Skeffing. .Shortly after his return ho went to Australia to purchase a large tract of land in the Northern Territory for Messrs Vestey Bros., but whilst there he contracted an illness from which he never recovered. He took a keen interest in political mattors and in local affairs, being at one time a member of the Mt. Herbert County Council and many other local bodies. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter, who are living in England. The interment, which was private, took place on Tuesday in the Governor's Bay cemetery.
