_ It is understood that the extension of time by twelvo months granted the Rivers Commission within which to submit its report has almost expired. From present indications it appears likely that a further extension will' be necessary. The engineers of the Public Works Department who Have been engaged on the survey of the north and south banks of the Waimakariri have just about completed tie field work, but it will take some time for them to prepare the maps based on that -work. Without the information that has been obtained by the engineers it is not possible for tne Commission to frame its recommendations. In respect of the Rangitata it is understood that sufficient information is available on which an interim report could be based.
