INCSEASE OF PARES,

"WELLINGTON, Jilay S3. The recent increases to the tramwaymen wiij cost about £40,C00 per annum. All Order-in-Coimcil limits the fare to 4d for four sections, and therefore the amount for this distance cannot be increased till the Order is varied.
Tho city engineer reported to tho City Council 111 favour of a minimum cash fare of 2d, rising to od for six sccuons. All conecssion tickets are .aereased. The.fares for these will range lYom lid to 4Jd.
•Mr Hutchison, a Labour member, moved an amendment to the adoption of the report in favour of deferring tho increases until the actual effect of tho higher \vage3 was seen, and then, if more revenue were required, that a graduated rate shou'd be 'evict! on unimproved land values. Mr Hutchison said that the Council was becoming involved in a vicious circle, and would be really guilty cf profiteering. The amendment was lost by 13 votes to -1. only the Labour members voting for it. Tho new rates were adopted.
