ft HANMER SP3IITGS. The local golf club recently concluded two competitions. One was an eightoenholo handicap (sweepstake) for men, and resulted as follows:—G. C'Brien, 9G-28-(jS; A. .1. Lythe lias had to resign owing to leaving the district, and the school children foregathered at the residence of Mr Will Cnrdwcll, and mnde her a presentation in recognition of her faithful work. In connexion with the Oxford .C.T. 1., a cradle roll meeting was neld in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday, when a number 01 mothers and babies were present. Mrs Gainsford, cradle roll superintendent, presided, and introduced Nurse ?\l:;ckny, of the Phmkct Society, who gave an interesting and instructive pdslress on the care of babies. Nurse }lackav received a vote of thanks for her address, ahd during the serving of afternoon tea several of those present took the opportunity to ask advice and information on particular noints. A business meeting of the W.C.T.T". was then held.

SOUTHEEOOK. At the annual meeting of the Southbrook Coronation Hall Committee, Mr A. Pickering presimrui, the report and balance-sheet, which was adooted, showed a credit balance of £ t 17s 2d. Tho annual meeting of parishioners of All Saints' Church, Prebbleton, was held in tho Library, the "vicar, tho Rev. G. V. Harding, presiding. Tho balance-sheets of the General Church Fund and the Cemetery Board Fund both showed satisfactory credits, and were adopted. Tho following officers were appointed:—Vicar's warden, Mr Isaac Harding; people's warden, Mr James Smith; vestry, Messrs Carpenter, Downey Robins, McNally, AV. Hands, C. Hands, and G. Walker; Messrs Yeatman, Cherry, and Wheeler to bo added should they consent to act; auditor, Mr F. Carpenter; secretary, Mr T. Robins. Favourable consideration was | given to the proposal that tho lodge should join tho United Friendly SocieI ties' Benevolent Association, and it was decided to take ihe opinion of the whole lodge at the half-yearly meeting. One candidate was initiated, and -one proposed for membership. Tho members of the Akaroa Boating Club held a smoke concert in the club rooms. Mr T. Lewitt occupied the chair. A short toast list included "The King," "Tho BoatingClub,'' "Old Timers," "Present Crews," I The Lntrres," "The Ex-President, Mr j O. \Y. Leeto," and "The Chairman." bongs, etc., were interspersed with the toasts. During the evening appreciative reference was made to the work of "The Old Timers," mention being made of Messrs Geo. AVhelch, J. AVoodill, M. Kearney, L. Ditelv, and others. SOUTH MALVERN. Fantails have,. onco more made their appearance in the district, but so far they hav© been of the pied variety only. A solitary speciman (male) of the* Black Cap was also seen in a plantation at Coalgate recently, and the notes of a bell bird were heard. The latter are; not usually found nearer than Rockwood, or Bush Gully. A start has been made with the sawmill in the Glentunncl domain, and a.largo number of pinus insignis butts are ready for the sawyer. Tho Glentunnel Domain Board is to be congratulated on the move it has made towards thinning the fine plantations round tho domain. In the middle 80's, when the domain was first planted, a large number of pinus insignis were put in, and these have long ago overgrown the finer firs and the_ English trees. The insignis are now being cut out, and when tho trees remaining have filled out, and tho replanting of more suitable trees has been carried out, the result will be a more beautiful domain. NORWOOD. Mr G. "Witty, M.P., introduced to tl|o Primo Minister at Christchurch yesterday Mr R. McDowell, who asked that a stationmaster should be provided at Norwood. . Mr Massey undertook to look into tho matter. LABBBOOKS. The first of a series of cuchre tournaments and dances was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening, there

being a good attendance. The results of the euchre tournament were: — Ladies: Ist prize, Mrs Schultz; i!n.d prize. Miss Annie McDrury. Gentlemen: Ist prize, Mr R. lirown; 2nd prize, Master Ted MeDrury. The music was supplied by Mrs Schultz. Miss M. Musson played an extra. Mr Gabitas acted as'M.C. Mr "W. Musson has sold his Ladbrooks farm to Mr French, and has purchased another property at South Springston. Mr Musson and family leave the district in. a few days. They will be greatly missed, as they have always taken an active part in all social and other functions. Large quantities of chaff and potatoes have been sent forward during the week, all for shipping. Tho creamery is still putting 'through largo quantities of cream. Mr A. Riches has been appointed manager and taken lip his'duties. Mr Riches was formerly in charge of this factory. The ladies' committee of the Leap ! Sear Ball, to be held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening, are sparing no pains to make this event a huge success. Given favourable weather, a Tcry largo attendance is expected. EANGIOKA. Representatives of the Friendly Societies and other organisations that are to take part in the card tournament met and arranged to commence play on Wednesday evening. The draw was made as follows:—Druids No. Oddfellows No. 1 3 Southbrook Fire Brigade v. X>ruids No. 1, Oddfellows No. 2 v. Rangiora Fire Brigade No. 1, Rangiora Fire Brigade No. 2 v. Labour Party No. 2, and Football Club v. Labour Party No. 1. The annual meeting of the croquet section of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club was held on Thursday, Mr W. E. Barton presiding. The report reviewing the successful results of last season's play was adopted. Officers were elected as follows: —President-, Mrs H. Jones; secretary, Mrs J. Golding; committee. Mesdames B-uddo, Chappell, Efford, Jennings, and J. \V. Jordan. Messrs H. Boyd and W. E. Barton were appointed representatives on the general committee of the. club, and Messrs AV. Allison and A. E. Gold"mg were. chosen for election to tho general committee. The election of « delegate to the Tennis Association was left to the now committee.
