Our London correspondent, writing on April Bth, i&ys: The bar with stars, indicating years of service, which are attached to the medals issued to the workers of the New Zealand War Contingent Association, is very greatly appreciated by the recipients. Mr 1. W. Raymond, iate chairman of the executive, on whose initiative the medals and bars were sanctioned, has received scores of letters fromhis old associates, expressing delight at*the design of the bar. Mr Andrew McKcating, son of the lato Mr Patrick McKcating, "Wilson street (says the "Galloway Advertiser"), has, through Messrs Moyr, solicitors, Edinburgh, received intimation that, by the death of his uncle in New Zealand, he has become heir to a fortune which amounts to £80,000. . McKeat-: ing sorved during the war in the Hoyal Scots Fusiliers, and since his discharge from the Army has been working on farms around Ballantrae and on the improvement scheme on Lord Inchcape's estate at Glenapp. One of the sights of I>uncdin which tho Prince and his suite voluntarily attended was the Ot-.igo Early tiettlers' Museum. The Prince -was particularly interested in a sewing machine that lias a history. It was brought out by a lady who, when in London, sewed for Queen Alexandra when she was P. inc'ss of Wales. .After the machine had been used by its owner for family wo;k for years, she sold it, with other things, at auction, and lost trace of it, but on coming to Dunedin on a visit from Wellington, she found it in the Earjv Ssttlers' Museum, and recogniscd iV, not only by its number, hut also by its type, which she had made in London out or a box got from a grocer. Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Paget has presented to the Royal Geographical Society a copy of a world map in hemisphere issued by the Dutch firm of BLaeu about the middle of the 17th century (whites our London correspondent). This map, which is reeavded aa one of the masterpieces of 17th century cartography, is included in the large collection of Dutch maps in the British Museum in the vo'.ume known as the King's Book, prrsented by Dutch merchants to Charles 11. at the restoration. But the copy in the British Museum, having been divided into its separate hemispheres and cut round the margins, larks some of the subsidiary diagrams and ornamentation found in the copy in the Royal Geographical Society's Map Room. It measures abo it 10ft by 6ft; the diameter of the circles representing the hemispheres is about 4ft lOin. It is particularly interesting for its representation of tho latest Dutch discoveries, the results of Tasraan's voyages, which include New Zealand. The map appears to have been copied, largely, for it was used as the standard map of the day. It seems clear, too, that one produced by Jesuits in China, which it was suggested was from Dutch sources, was a copy of it.

It is that a soldier acquitted shall be so ' informed in open court. Under the old system nothing so dramatic was provided for. While the members con- I sidered their finding the Court was cleared, and if they derided on acquit-1 tal, the accused would first hear of the matter when he found himself ise!e;isod from arrest. Now, however, the prisoner will be brought back and told all about it. Among the last of the returned soldiers to shake hands with the Prince of I Wales at Dunodin on Wednesday was a man in a well-known uniform and civilian hat. He obtained considerable attention from the Prince, who chatted to him for several' minutes. It appears that the man was an ex-member of the Grenadier Guards, the Prince's own regiment, and that he was one of the "Old Contemptibles." As the man passed some of the crowd, someone said, "Where's ycur hat?" Quickly the soldier replied: "I lost it at Jlons lon# before you knew there was a war on." A deputation from the superannuated pubiic servants waited on tho Hon. C. J. Parr. at Auckland yesterday for tho purpose of enlisti.ig his sympathy in the matter of securing an increase in tho superannuation allowance. It was stated that mr.nv old public servants now fcund themselves unable to maintain themselves on the sum which had been, sufficient when they retired, and they had decided to ask the Government to supplement the amount received by way of bonus. Mr Parr sa : d he would give the matter his sympathetic attention when it was before the Cabinet. Tho intended flight by Cape. D'ckson and Mr T. D. B.:rn tt, M'.P., lrom Fairlie to the Hermitage was commenced yesterday morning but not comp'eted. Starting at about 10.30 o'ekek, in bright, calm weather, they struck a nor'-west gale, but made th'eir way over Fox Peak and Lake Tekapo agni 'st tho gale. Tho Alps and valleys were hidden by clouds and dust, and it was useless to go further. The situation of the Hermitage and lie of the valley could be made out, and Captain Dickson is satisfied that the Mackenzie Basin and tho hills between it. and Fair-ie are good flying country. Tho gale, which had been driving the new-fa.'len snow like wisps of smoke off the top of the range before the start, reached Fairlio just before the aviators landed, but a good landing was made. _ The machino, however, had to be well tied down. Captain Dickson _ proposes leaving for Christ°hu r ch with two passengers at daylight this morning.
