THE RAILWAY "CUT."
NO RELIEF FOR, TWO OR THREE MONTHS. Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P.,told a meeting of business men at Masterton on Thursday that ho had had a long interview with the General Manager for Railways (Mr McVilly). The railway manager placed all the figures at his disposal, and ne was satisfied that the statements and figures plaeed before the public by Mr McVilly from time to time were absolutely correct. A few days previously the reserve of coal available for railway purposes was only 8000 tons. He repeated that tho coal shortage was genuine, and a critical one as far as tlie railways were concerned-. Tho Chairman: Did Mr McVilly give you any idea how long the present diffl:ultv is likely to last? Mr Sykes: Mr McVilly held put no fiope of the present acuto position being changed for two or three months.
