, — RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. j (BT "LOOKBR-ON.") I Acceptanccs for tlie Grand National Steeplechase, Grand National Hurdles, and "Winter Cup close at S o'clock this evening, and entries for the minor events at the Grand National Meeting will close at the same time. A heavy frost delayed work at lliccarton yesterday until after 9 a.m. The inside of tho trial grass, which was open for fast work, provided capital going, and most tracers used it, but many of the first to work preferred the sand. •Morecambe, Omahu, Qynic, Rewi Poco, Sir Solo, and Master Lupin did steady pacing. ' With the exception of Cynic, who is a bit tied ug, they moved well. Amaranthus, who was brought home by a stablemate, was all out to run four furlongs in 53 2-sth sec on the tan, which is not a fast track. Sam Pan was given two circuits on tho sand with a rattle down the straight each time. Karo was given strong pace work. She does not seem to be getting a Winter Cup preparation. Iliero was too good for Belair over six furlongs run in lmin 18 4-sth sec. Gamecock, who was carrying a big weight, pleased by tho manner in which he ran down four furlongs in 51sec. j Bore galloped seven furlongs at liis best pace, and took lmin 34sec to do it. He was carrying a light weight. Post Haste, who was also carrying a light weight, ran four furlongs in 51sec. Both gallops were on the sand. Form Up ran half a mile in 51 2-sth sec; while The Sapper was just too good for Fabisco over seven furlongs in lmin 33sec. Paremata was given a sprint over a few furlongs, and Winslow was given 1 steady pacing. Winslow was spooled over the hurdles with Atahaeri on Wednesday afternoon. A.tahaeri gave the better exhibition. Sonny beat Jeannot over a mile in lmin 47 3-sth sec. Goldshine ran four furlongs in 55 3-sth sec, and Gloaming five in lmin ssec . . Caverock, who is coming on quickly, . ran four furlongs in 51 3-sth sec. He i was brought home by Sea Blue. Rod Kea was given serviceable work, , and is throwing off his soreness. Rcdshire just beat Kilkee over four furlongs, after a great go, in 49 4-sth sec. Moorabbo sprinted, and Com- » meiifc beat Merton over five furlongs iy the useful time of lmin 4 3-oth sec. Single Rose had a slight advantage of Hands Off at the end of five furi longs run in lmin ssec. Art, who lolloped seven furlong 3 in lmin 34 4-sth sec, had the assistance of Starlike over the last half-mile. The National Hurdle candidate finished well, and looked as if he could have knocked a littlo off the time. Charley clashed over • fonr furlongs in 50 3-stli Bee. Pretty Bobby and, Athens 11. were companions in a sprint over the same ground, that took 53sec, but they were not out to make time. Gay Lad, moving like a piece of machinery, left six furlongs behind in lmin 17 l-sth sec. Wild Piljrrim, Kaminohe, and Glenshine, all of Ehem carrying fair weights, finished in that order at the end of five furlongs, run ia lmin. 6 3-sth sec. . Glenshino. who lost a lot of ground at the start, was gathering up tho other two very fast at the finish. Loyal Arch (F. Gray) and Multivo (H. Lorigan) were companions in a bout over five flights of hurdles. Tho pair kept together to the third fence, where Multive made a mistake, and looked likely to fall, but thouqjh he ' hit tho fence very had he saved himself cleverly. This took all the sting out of him, and he never got on terms with tho mare again, who is a very fast fencer. Achilledes (R. McSeveny) and Tip Up (L. Hagerty) were schooled _ over four flights of hurdles. Achilledes fonced well, but Tip Up screwed badly on two occasions, and will evidently want plenty of schooling before becoming; a proficient jumper. Sniper, with a companion, ran four furlongs up tho back in 50 2-sth sec. Sir Ralph and All Over did a working gallop over seven furlongs in lmin 39scc. Tortrix and the yearling filly by Bezonian—Peace sprinted three furlongis in 38 l-sth sec. Tortrix was an easy winner. Marvelito (L. Hagerty) jumped five flights of hurdles. He jump 9 too big at present, but with schooling ha should make a fine fencer. Vascular (F. Gray), Dardanelles (J. McChesncy), Signature (F. Ellis), and Lawsuit were companions in a schooling gallop over the country. The first throe named went twice round, over eleven fenccs ift all, and gave a great showing, Vascular bein f , in front all the way. Lawsuit, who was pulled off at the end 'of a circuit, did not . fence well, but gave a much better showing than he did at Waimato. The time for tho first circuit was 2min 2 2-oth sec, and for the two 4min 2 l-sth sec. Vascular and Lochella both trotted tenderly before the start, but pulled up well. Signature (F. Ellis) and Waimai (F. Tutchcn) were schooled together over four of the big fences. Waimai gained lengths at each fenco. Afterwards the pair worked a circuit at a solid three-quarter pace. • The Grand (F. Gray) and Micky Doolan (R. MtfSeveny) were companions in a round over tho country. Both hunters fenced much better than on Tuesday, and are learning to gallop into their fences. Cerberus was not asked for his best wliilo running five furlongs in lmin 5 sec. Master Strowan. Gang Awa, Elocution, and Potentiality arrived from the North yesterday. Grand Duchy is due to arrive from Dunedin by the. Molioia, and Coalition will arrive from Trent ham on Tuesday next. Rebekah and Imaribbon will arrive from Blenheim in a few days' time. (BT "Skabchmoht.") News has been received from the West Coast of the death of Mr W. R. McNarn, who was well-known in trotting circles aa the owner of Bed

Heather and -Marietta, two good performers in the unhoppled division. SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT MEETING. (SFIXIAL TO "THE PRESS."} TDU'fC, Jit'v G-J. TIvOTTING CLUB S'ECKETA'RYSHIPS. TO THE EDITOR OK "TrflS PRESS." Sir,—V.'iil von kindly allow me space to give a final "reply to Mr Bridge. In li:s 1-tter of aist ir.st. fa's so*> right nway frrn tho subject of secretaryships, and accuscs rac of feeling hurt b:cji s? in> fcis taken Mr Kiittrav's part. Personally I a.-n very pleased thfl-t ho dor.c- so, fcecatisc tho more publicity the m&tlcr gctj tho more chancc there is c' conic tiling bcin? done in it. \i[ racintr men know that Jtr liaa done a jot for t tolling In Christcimrcli and none approoiatc hi 3 rnci-gus in this direction more than myself. On the ot.ier hand one 'nr.st not lose sirlit of the fact wot trotting has been of 3 11 to Itiin. In niv letter of 19th I stated that with a club holdir.fi el?, or seven Ooys' racing in a yea.!', there were 306 add:t:o:ial days during which t!io secretary could do oilier fvoroiaria-l work. Now it does not require a Solomon to know that- a secretary has not timo for other work wluilst liis club ia holding a ra/-c pieetinT;. but ou the othc.r liar.d ho would be a vrv c .i°i!v man if the sis or seven days of actual racing would give him sufficient work tor tho olher 306 days on which his club was not holding race meetings. I will acccr«t Jlr Bridge's Gtetemrnt that J(r Ba'trsiv flft'r the thre" rln.bs' jitereate whilst his assistant wa& at th - ? front. Probably Mr Bridge docs not know that during the. whole or part of that time that tatulisator permits we-rv cut down by onethird. This left Mr Eo.ttray with only twothirds cf the original d«vs of raein? to pft"nd to, ar/.l he also had the assistance of Hr ReynoJde, or Eomeono else on the days when nominations and acceptances were due. Probably ilr Kaltray docs not want any outsiders to assist him, but prefeiTerl to do a little over time, like plenty of othere, durinj the timo war v.-ng on. I originally mado a snrgeetion that the three clubs should not all be ur.vler th" diiwtioii of one secretary. I will now po further, and. try to point out to tho local clubs why it may be wise for each one to have its own secretary. Quite recently a number of new trotting ch'ie have been formed in tho Dominion, and they will na'.nrallv look to pet totnlisa.tor Under existing circumstanccs the Government will not i9-=ue any more. The bulk of the trotting permits are given to the South lebnd, and naturally the North Ts'.nnd chiJw iV-lota of iH». ? r n number of i>eoplo belon? to at bast two, if not tho local trot.'inr? clubs, and all tho eecI retaryshipaare in the hands of om mn. "Who cji.n eav that the Minister of Internal Affairs <-v*! no*, have nra'"* 1 on him make these three clults amalgamate? He would then naturnJly rct-iiin some of tlie ' mits 60 aa to eatisfv som» of tlie other clubs. 1 I may state that Mr Bat tray brought this mfltter under my notice several years ago, , and I enn cuite easily prove this fact. Now, Mr Bridge and I have had ouitc a lot of cheap advertising, and I think _wo should be prepainvj to do for it.; so I make the following p'opofMcn:—We each hand tho Editor of "The Press" the i tujn of jKS on con-'i'ion t- 1 )" m n ' T,:,v,r ß of I one of the three clubs will take a ballot on «-Whcr they think it advisable to "ive tho club secretaryship to a returned soldier. I only ask for the privilege of naming ihe ■ club wliioh I propoeo asking to agree to • tihi«. Mt Bridge and myself to appoint oar orwn i scrutineer, and the ballot papers not to be numbered. No matter how the ballot I will hand i my £J5 to the Coal and Blanket Fund for ' the poor of Christchurch, as this is a chari- ; table institution. Mt Bridse must agTce 'to tho same conditions, but his X 25 will go to the Returned i SoHiers' Buildinc Fund.—Yours, etc.. ! W. J. MOIR. Jtsily 24th.
