I BROOKDALE STUD FLOCKS. j Among the victims of the influenza [ epidemic last summer wore several of : • Canterbury's most noted sheep breeders who belonged to the second generation, and who wore-doing good service to the ' country by the. eSorts they vers malting fcr the improvement or flocks. Nov the least enterprising was the late Mr A. "W. Rutherford. jun., of Brookdale, Parnassus, who, besides maintaining a first-class stud flock of merinos, v.":ss also devoting considerable attention to | tho breeding of halfbreds ana crossj breds. The Brookdale and Mount Beevor estates liaving recently been sold, the stud Socks were dispersed by auction yesterday by the New Zealand Farmers" Co-oporativc Association. The sale was a j very successlul one, especially for tho merincts, most of which, however, wero bought by relatives of the late owner. Tho sheep were not &ot up for sale '>u*/ were, in fact, more or les3 out of condition, duo to the time cf year_ at which the salo was held, and the prices generally were considered very good. The sale was conducted by Mr Maedon aid, chief stock salesman for the New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Association, and the work of penning tho sheep was well carri-cd out by Mr It. Hennah. A substantial luncheon was provided, the caterer being Mr J. Asllworth, of Domett. The Brookdale stud merino flock v.-as founded by tho late Mr George Rutherford, .grandfather of the late Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., and was descended from ewes bred by tho late Mr John Murray, of Mount Crawford, South Austra'ia. Sinco then the sires used in tb~ flock havo imported ei lic-r from Australia ana Tasmania or bred by the owner. Tho English Leicester flock was founded upon ewes purchased from Mr A. W. Rutherford) een., in 1.907. The top price of the salo was guineas paid by Mr George Gerard for a three-shear merino ram, bred by Gibson's Trustees, Tasmania. Mr Norman Rutherford gavo 175 guineas and 150 guineas respectively for two rams bred by the lato Mr A. W. Rvtberford, jun.,. their sire being a Canowie ram. Tbo next best- was 110 guineas paid by Mr George Murray fcr a threeshear ram bred by Messrs J. Sloano and Son, New South Wales. Another ram of the lato 3lr Rutherford's breeding went at Go guineas to Mr W. W. Mcßae. The following wero the results of tho sale: — MERINOS.
